HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,038, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed April 18, 1587 adjustable hinges; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
One object-of my invention is to provide a hinge by which a door which may have be.- come warped or shrunken may be adjusted in its relative position to thejamb and with re-' spect to the striker-plate by simple means, which are convenient and accessible, and which do not necessitate the removal of the door to operate them.
A further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable hinge to be used in connect-ion with doors, which is simple andfiffective in its construction and operation, strong and durable, easily handled and readily understood, applied in connection with any door now in use, positive in its result, and cheaply manufactured.
Iattain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawingswherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the severel views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the door and a portion of the jamb, showing my improved hinge in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of myimprovedhinge, the parts thereof being shown separated. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts of the hinge united. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the said hinge united, the one leaf thereof being removed. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line a: a: of Fig. 4.
A indicates a leaf of ahinge of the ordinary form of construction,having a central knuckle, a, and a recess, a, in the face thereof. This leaf A is adapted to be screwed in connection with the. rear edge of the door, as in the usual manner of hanging doors.
B represents the other leaf of the hinge, which is constructed in the form of an angleplate, having two plates, b and b, united at Serial No. 235.235. (No model.)
right angles, and at the intersection of which two knuckles, b", are formed, between which the knuckle a of the leaf A engages andis retained by the pintle If, passing through said knuckles and into the lower retaining-lug, 6 as shown. The plate b is also provided with a recessed face, b, and has a screw, O,passing therethrough and retained in connection therewith by two plates, 0 c, encircling the rear portion of said screw on the opposite side of the plate I). These plates 00 are securely fastened to the rear face of the plate I) and engagewith a recess formedin the shank of the screw, and thereby retain the head thereof in a fixed position with respect to the outer surface of the plate b. When the hinge entire is shut, by closing the door to which it is attached,the recesses a in the leaf A and b in the plate b form a combined recess which passes over the head of the said screw 0 without causing any project-ion thereby. The portion 1) of the plate B is shorter than the plate I), and is provided with two slots, 1)", which are elongated and operate as will be presently described.
In asuitablerabbet formed in the door-jamb WV a plate, I), is secured, as more fully illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This plate Bis of similar configuration to the plate B, which engages therewith, being" an angleplate provided with the two plates cl and d, intersecting each other at right angles. The face d of the plate I) is provided with the series of screw-holes d through which wood-screws pass and secure the same to the door'jamb W. At about the central portion of the said plate d acountersunk circular recess, d, is constructed, in the central portion of which an aperture, (2, is bored, which extends through a boss, :1, formed integrallywitli the rear face of the said plate at. This boss is provided with a female screw-thread, and which is adapted to be engaged by the screw 0, the recess d fitting over the two retaining-plates 0 c on the rear-face of the plate (1 of the section B of the hinge. The portion 01 of the plate D is provided with two screw-holes, d and has also right-angled projections d at each end thereof. When the sections D and B of the hinge are united, the plate d of the section D rides over the surface of the plate I) of the section B between the angular projections d, the slots d IOC in the portion (Z of the section B engaging and passing over the screw-holes d in the section D. Suitable screws, E E, pass through the elongated openings d and into the screw-holes (Z and are adapted to rigidly clamp the section B in connection with the section D.
It will be understood that the screws G and E will be machine-screws, and the operation of adjusting the hinge will be as follows: If, after the hinge is applied, the door to which it is connected should become displaced from its relative position with the jamb and strikerplate, and perchance sag downward, thescrew G is turned in such a direction that the plate B will slide away from the plate D, it being understood that the screws E have previously been loosened. The screws E will then be tightened and clamp the section D in connection with the section B, and rigidly hold the hinge in its adjusted position. If, on the con trary, the door will bind at any point, the screw 0 is screwed home into the boss cl and the section B of the hinge drawn toward and over the section D and the door drawn away from the opposite side of the jamb or the part with which it impinges, and the screws E E then caused to clamp the two parts together, as heretofore described. The section B of the hinge is inserted in the jamb of the door, with the boss thereof passing into an opening formed in the saidjamb, which acts as an auxiliary for retaining the hinge in addition to the securing-screws thereof. The section Bis unsecured at any point,exceptto the leaf A,as here inbefore described, and is adjustably held in connection with the section D by means of the clampingscrew E E and the adjusting-screw C.
By this construction of hinge a convenient hinge are apparent and its practicability obvious, and itis readily seen that slight variations in the construction and arrangement of the several parts can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a hinge, the leaf A, the section B, constructed in the form of an angle-plate, having the portions 1) b, the adjusting-screw O in the portion 1) of the section B, the section D,with which the screw 0 engages, and the set-screws E in the portion bof the section B, as setforth.
2. The combination, with the leaf A, of the angular portion 13, havingthe two plates band I), with the elongated apertures 12 formed in the former and the screw 0 retained in connection with the latter, the section D, having the two plates (1 amid, the guide projections d on the plate (I, and the screws E E, working through the apertures 11, substantially as described.
