Description
Patented Aug. 23, |898.
VNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS M. CURRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE JANI B-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,7 56, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed August 2, 1 8 9 7.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS M. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable .Tamb-Hinges and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an adjustable hinge attachment for door-jambs, and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the swelling or shrinking of a door and jamb may be conveniently compensated for and the parts accurately adjusted with reference to each other. 4
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a hinge embodying the improvement; Fig. 2, a detached perspective of a socket-piece; and Fig. 3, a broken-awayhorizontal section on line 3, Fig. l, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
A represents an ordinary door-hinge; A', the door; B, an adjustable jamb; C C', the jamb-lining, and D a stud.
A plate E is located on the inner side of the jarnb and is secured rigidly in place by a number of screws a, inserted through the leaf a of the door-hinge and the jamb and ending in the plate. The plate E is provided on the outer side with a stop projection a2, which holds the hinge and vplate some distance apart and extends through the jamb. A guide projection 0,3 is formed on the opposite side of the plate E.
A socket-piece F, provided with a lug a4, is
seated in the stud D and secured in place by screws a5, passing through the lug d4, as shown in Fig. 3. The projection CL3 is inserted loosely in the chamber b of the socketpiece F and is adapted to have an endwise movement therein.
The stop projection a and the guide projection a3 have a passage b extending longitudinally therethrough for the reception of the adj ustin g-sorew II, the inner end of which has a threaded engagement with the thick- Serial No. 646,770. (No model.)
ened bottom part d of the socket-piece F. The head d of the adj usting-screw bears against the inner side of hinge-leaf a and is provided with the screw-driver slot g, which is reached through an aperture 7L in the hingeleaf and which is of a less diameter than the head of the adj usting-screw, so that the latter is adapted to have a rotary but not a longitudinal movement.
New, as the proper relative position of the door and jamb is aected by atmospheric changes, the parts maybe adjusted by turning the adjusting-screw in one direction or the other, as the case may require. Turning the adjusting-screw to the right draws the movable jamb inwardly, the guide projection as moving in the same direction in the socket-piece F. Turning the adjustingscrew to the left moves the parts in the opposite direction.
It will be understood, of course, that each of the hinges connecting the door may be provided with the adjusting device and that but a slight movement of the adjustable parts is sufficient for the purpose of maintaining the required relative position.
`Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe combination with a door or other object, of a movable jamb, a hinge, a plate, secured to one leaf of the hinge and located on the inner side of the jamb and having a stop projection extending therethrough, and a guide projection extending in the opposite direction, a socket-piece, secured rigidly in place and with which said guide projection has a movable engagement, and an adjusting-screw, inserted` longitudinally through said plate and projections and having a threaded engagement with said socket-piece, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS M. CURRY.
Witnesses:
L. M. FREEMAN, L. B. COUPLAND.
