Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-eti May i5, i917.
Applatieinlee Dew-@Per 132.19.15, SerialNQ-Glt To all 10 homA it may concern.;
Be it ki'i'owny that I, lCHARLES lJriwirr'i SAXE, a citizen of the UnitedAv States of America, and resident of-thewcity: of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stops forWindows `or Doors, and do hereby declare that the folf` v lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of same.
This invention relates to an adjustable device for holding swinging windows or doors in a desired position such .as ajar and it has for an object to economize space in the application of the device to the window or door, to avoid unsightliness and minimize exposure of such device to the elements.
The above with further objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates partly in elevation and partly in vertical section the lower hinged corner of a window, adjacent frame and my improved stop;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 22 Fig. 1, with the window closed;
Fig. 8 is a transverse section on line 3 8 Fig. 2; and n I Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the window ajar.
This adjusting device is equally. well adapted for use in connection with a hinged door, window or other swinging member but I have illustrated same as applied to a window and referring now to the drawings, 2 indicates the window which is hinged at 3 to the frame 4 or other stationary part.
ISet either in the frame or other stationary member 4 or in the sash is a device which, when the window is swung to a desired position is automatically adjusted to hold the window in such position and act as a stop to prevent accidental swinging. In the preferred form the device consists of a friction drag attached to the edge of the frame to which the window is hinged and located in a preferably round recess 5 formed in theedge of thewhinged side of the., window sash and extending inwardly from that edge of lthe sash which-.isrcovered by, theframe thel l window, is closed.
Thefriction drag consists of a pair of friction shoes 6 connected at their outer ends to the frameby a link .7 .and yieldingly held against the wall of the recess by an intermediate spring device consisting for example of a pair of oppositely disposed laminated springs 8 connected at the center and each having their ends bearing against the interior of one of the shoes to tightly press same against the wall of the recess, which latter is provided with a metallic lining 9. The friction shoes are preferably constituted by a tube split longitudinally at diametrically opposite points and the link 7 is pivotally connected thereto by means of a `pin 10 which passes through the halves of the split tube and through the link, segmental distance pieces 11 being located between the link and the halves of the tube and surrounding the pin 10 on opposite sides of the link.
The outer end of the link 7 is pivotally connected t0 the frame or other stationary member 4 through the medium of a plate 12 secured to and -preferably countersunk in the edge of the frame at a point opposite recess 5 and presenting spaced lugs 13 between which the outer end of the link is disposed and pivotally connected thereto by a pin 14, the recess being of a size to permit of the entrance of the lugs so that when the window is closed the recess is covered by the frame and the friction drag protected from the elements.
The frictional resistance set up between the shoes 6 and the wall of the recess, by springs 8, holds the window against accidental movement, but in swinging the window to a desired position the frictional resistance is overcome and the drag moved by the window to a different position where it again frictionally holds the window against accidental movement, the drag being thus automatically adj usted to hold the window in the desired position.
A stop 15 at the mouth of recess 5 prevents excessive withdrawal of the drag and it will be seen that by inclosing the latter, all unsightliness is avoided and no additional space is required, while the device is protected from the elements as the recess 'is covered and the drag completely inclosed when the window is closed.
What I claim is as follows:
l. In combination, a frame, a window sash hinged to the frame and having 'a recess therein, shoes within the recess, a spring device pressing the shoes against the wall of the recess and a connection between the shoes and frame and having a lateral movement within the recess.
2. In combination, a frame, a window sash hinged to the frame and having a recess therein, the edge of the frame being adapted to cover the recess, a tube within the recess, such tube being longitudinally split at diametrically opposite points, a pair of laminated springs between and respectively bearing against the halves of the tube, a stop to limit the withdrawal of the tube from the recess and a link pivotally connected at its ends to the tube and frame respectively and having a lateral movement within the recess.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES JEWETT SAXE.
