Be it known that I, WILsoN T. ROBERTS, of Greenville, county of Darke, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Detachable Hinge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts The object of this invention is to render a lid or door secured to hinges readily removable or attachable to a stationary part.

It is adapted for use in pianos and other structures where it is desirable that the hinged member be readily removable or attachable.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a door and door-casing with a pair of hinges secured to both, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a part of the door and door-casing with the hingelock turned in position to permit the removal of the hinge from the door-casing. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2 with the hinge moved somewhat, so as to be immediately detachable. Fig. 4 is the same with the hinge detached from the door-casing. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through Fig. 4 near thescrew with one leaf turned back In the drawings, 10 represents the doorcasing, and 11 the door. The hinge is a leafhinge, with one leaf 12 secured to the door. The other leaf 16, which is secured to the easing, is new and peculiar.

The leaf 16 of the hinge, which is secured to the casing, has in it two holes 13 larger than the two screws 14, that are screwed into the casing and which are adapted to extend into the holes 13. The holes 13 have extensions 15, to the right as shown in these drai ings, in a direction away from the secured leaf 12. The screws protrude far enough that the lock-plate 17 will fit snugly between the casing and the heads of the screws.

The lock-plate 17 is pivoted at 18 to the part 16 of the hinge between the two holes 13. Said lock-plate also has a slot on each side thereof and diagonally opposite each other, curved substantially concentric with the pivot 18 and adapted when the lock-plate i herein named.

17 is in a horizontal position to receive and engage the screws 14. The lock-plate 17 cannot be turned from a vertical to a horizontal position until the leaf 16 of the hinge i has been inserted over the screws 14 and moved to the left as far as possible, so that the screws will extend through the extensions 15 of the holes 13. Then the lock-plate can be turned down into a horizontal position and will securely lock and wedge the leaf 16 of the hinge against the door-casing under the heads of the screws 14. The lockplate 17 has a notch 20 to receive the right hand screw 14 when said lock-plate is in its vertical position to prevent the lock-plate from'being turned down to its horizontal position until the hinge or the hole has been moved to the left as far as possible.

From the foregoing it is seen that the door may be readily removed from the position shown in Fig. 1 by first turning the lock-plate to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2, and then pushing the door 11 to the right in the position shown in Fig. 3, and then drawing the door outward. The door may be secured in place by reversing the foregoing operation.

hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A hinge with a leaf having two holes through it, a locking-plate pivoted thereto between said holes and having diagonally opposite recesses curved concentrically with the pivot of said plate that registers with said holes when the plate is in a locking position and which are narrower than said holes, and screws extending through said recesses and holes with heads smaller than said holes and larger than said recesses.

2. A hinge having a pair of holes through one leaf thereof said holes having reduced portions extending in the same direction, a locking-plate pivoted on said leaf of the hinge between said holes having diagonally opposite recesses curved concentrically with the pivotal point of said plate and of the same width as the narrowed portions of said holes, and screws extending through said recesses and holes with heads smaller than the large portions of said holes and larger than said recesses and the smaller portions of said holes.
