WILLIAM WEBSTER, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Application filed .Tuly 16, 1912. Serial No. 709,729.
['o al? whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEBSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a hinge for doors and like swinging` articles, and means by `which the hinge and the article carried by it may be adjusted in any direction to suit the desired conditions.
It consists of a pair of hinge plates, one of which is flanged and secured to the casing or other support, having flanges around the edges which leave a space between the plate and the casing, and the other plate, carrying the pintle of the hinge, being adapted to slip into this space and having means for adjusting it up or do-wn therein and for subsequently locking it in position.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the hinge and holding plate. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the device opened. Fig. 3 shows the hinge closed.
It is the object of the invention to provide a means for adjusting doors or other devices carried upon hinges, so that any sagging out of line or any swelling transversely may be compensated for without taking down the door or cutting away portions thereof.
As shown in the drawings, A is a plate having a flange 2 extending around three sides thereof and bolt holes made through it, as shown at 3. This plate is adapted to rest with the flange side against a casing or other support, thus leaving an open space around the interior and between the flanges.v
4E is another plate having a thickness which allows it to be slipped into the space beneath the plate A and having channels formed from the edge of the plate, as shownl at 5; these channels connecting with enlarged circular openings 6 which are substantially in line with the holes 3 ofthe plate A. The edge of this plate is formed in the usual manner, with the sockets for the pintle 7, and the opposite leaf 8 of the hinge is of similar construction with the Copies of this patentmy ne obtained for last named leaf, having the openings, as at 6, and the open connecting channels 5 to fit the plate corresponding to A which may be fixed upon the door or other portion.
Through the central opening of the plate A and in line with the corresponding slot 5 of the plate 1l, passes a holding bolt or screw 9, and through the other holes are corresponding screws or bolts, all of which pass through the yopenings 6 of the plate 4. v Vhenever it is desired to aflix the part carried by the plate 4, it is only necessary to slip this plate into the open space formed by the flangesybeneath the plate A. When the part carried by the pintle is properly adjusted, vthe screws or bolts are drawn tight, thus clamping the parts firmly together. If the door sags or if it binds on the edge, it 1s only necessary to loosen the bolts and to lraise it in one case, or to move it inwardly or outwardly in the other case, and again secure the bolts in place, the size of the openings 6 being suflicient to allow of sufficient alteration. The device forms a convenient and rapid means for adjusting such parts when adjustment is needed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. In an adjustable hinge, a plate having a flange upon three sides and holes by which it may be secured, a second plate having corresponding openings of larger diameter and slot-s extending therefrom to the edge of the plate, said second plate being adapted to slip into the space formed by the flanges of the first-named plate, and means by which Vthe two may be locked in place.
2. In an adjustable hinge, a flanged plate with screws by which it may be secured to a casing or door, and having a space between the two, and a second plate having slotscorresponding with the screw holes and y i l adapted to slide into the space beneath the first-na1ned plate, said second plate" having enlarged circular openings Vconnected with slots.
In testimony `.vhereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM WEBSTER. itnesses Gr.. H. STRONG,
JOHN II. I-IERRING.
