ANTHONY VANDERVELD, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GRAND RAPIDS SHOW CASE COMPANY, 0F MICHIGAN.
.0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed March 29, 1910. Serial No. 552,189.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY VANDER- vELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable hinges, and more particularly to such hinges as applied to articles of furniture, its object being to provide ready and simple means of adjustment to compensate for shrinking, swelling, sagging, or warping of hinged doors or other hinged parts, and to provide the device with various new and useful features as hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l shows my improved adjustable hinge as applied to an article of furniture; Fig. 2 the same detached from the article of furniture and showing the back or reverse side of the same; Fig. 3 a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4 a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents a fragment of the stile, and 2 a fragment of a hinged door of au article of furniture.
3 is the fixed or stationary leaf or member of my improved hinge, preferably to be at-.
tached to the stile.
4 is the movable leaf or member which is preferably attached to the door. This leaf 4 is provided with slotted openings 5 adapted to receive the screws 6 and 13, which provide means for attaching the leaf 4 to the door 2.
To provide means for adjusting the door 2 in its relation to the relatively fixed position of the leaf 4, I provide this leaf with a vertically elongated opening 7, in which opening is rotatively mounted an eccentric 8 in fixed relation to the door 2 and rotatable upon a screw or stud 9. This eccentric 8 is fixed to a member 10 by any suitable means,
that shown being rivets 11. This member 10 is provided with a slot 12, which is concentric with the stud 9. A screw 13 is provided, which is adapted to lock this member l0 from rotating and also assists in attaching the leaf 4 to the door 2, when said screw is tightened to lock the member l0 from rotating.
The operation of my improved adjustable hinge is as follows: The leaf 4 is preferably attached to the door 2 with the throw of the eccentric 8 in mid position (see Fig. 2). If it is desired to adjust the position of the door, the screws 6 and 13 are loosened and the member 10 rotated in the proper direction, the eccentric 8 being fixedly attached to this member 10, it rotates therewith and engages one side of the opening 7 in the leaf 4, and thus the door 2 is caused to move either toward or from the stile 1. It is obvious that by adjusting one or both of the pair of hinges used on a door, substantially any compensative adjustment that might be rcquired could thus easily and quickly be made.
Vhat I claim is l. A hinge, one leaf of which is adapted to be fixed to a support, the other leaf being provided with means for adjustable attachment, means for accomplishing such adjustmeut, and means for locking the adjusting means.
2. A hinge, one leaf of which is provided with attaching means and adapted to be fixed to a stationary member, the other leaf being provided with attaching means and provision for adjustment and adapted to be attached to a door and having an opening engaged by an adjusting member, the same being provided with locking means to maintain the adjustment.
8. In a device of the class described, a stile, a door, and a hinge, one leaf of which is fixed to the stile, the other leaf being adjustably attached to the door, said adjusting means comprising slotted openings to receive the attaching screws, an opening engaged by an eccentric, and means for moving and locking said eccentric at any desired point.
4. In a device of the class described, a hinge, one leaf of which is provided with openings to receive attaching screws, the In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature other leaf having slotted openings to receive in presence of two Witnesses.
Yattaching screws, and also having an open- ANTHONY VANDERVELD ing to receive an eccentric, a pivoted member, an eccentric fixed to said member and Witnesses:
engaging the last named opening, and a slot PALMER A. JONES,
in said member engaged by a locking screw. HAROLD O. VAN ANTWERP.
