- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1910. Serial No. 549,936.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MANDERBAQH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Culbertson, in the county of Valley and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door hinges and one of the objects thereof is the provision of a door hinge with a sectional leaf adapted to be adjusted on a suitable support, whereby the hinge can hold a door to a casing having surfaces disposed on a different plane from those of the door.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a spring door hinge having a leaf provided with an integral spring casing a leaf provided with an adjustable attaching portion whereby the leaves may be secured to surfaces in difi'erent planes.
With the above and other objects in view the lnvention comprlses certain combinatlons, constructlons and arrangementsfof parts clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, wherein,
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view showing the improved hinge secured to a door and the casing thereof, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the door hinge, Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 is a detail sec-' tional View showing the ratchet and pawl adjustment for the spring of the hinge. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the section 12, showing the posts or guides 20'. Fig. 6 is a detailperspective view of the thumb-screw or pin 18.
Referring to'the accompanying drawings illustrating theinvention 1 denotes a door casing and'2 the door which works in the casing. A hinge leaf section 3 is attached to the door-2, which leaf section is provided with an integral spring casing 4 and. with integral pintle holding lugs or arms 5 and 6, located at the ends of said leaf. The ends of the casing 4 are spaced apart from the lugs or: arms 5 and 6 to form slots 7 and 8, the slot 7 being of greater width than the slot 8. The lug or arm 5 is formed with an integral pin 9, forming a socket for the reception ofthe threaded end of the pintle 10, one end of which is provided with a head 11, formed to mate the head of the pin 9. The pintle extends through an opening in the lug or arm 6 and into the socket of the pin 9, to which it is secured.
The second leaf comprises two sections 12 and 13; the section 12 being secured to the door casing l by suitable screws and the section 13 being .hingedly connected by its pintle engaging lugs or arms 11 and 15 with the pintle 10. The section 13 is provided with three vertically spaced perforated lugs, two lugs 16 being located near the ends of the section 13 and one lug 17 being located midway on said section between the lugs 16. The central lug 17 is provided with internal screw threads for the reception of the thumb screw or pin 18, which is provided with an end 19 swiveled in an opening of the attaching section 12. The section 12 is provided with two fixed posts or guides 20, which work freely through the perforated lugs 16. The lengths of the guide posts 20 and the screw 18 may vary, according to the thickness of the casing, and the guide posts 20 may be riveted in place or threaded to the section 12, as desired.
- On the pintle 10 a coil spring 21 is positioned, one end of this spring being secured in the recess 22 of the section 13 and the outer end being secured to the tubular extension 28 of the ratchet wheel 24, which wheelis located between the lugs 5 and 15. The ratchet wheel 24=is engaged by a pawl 25 which is secured to the sectionor leaf 3 so as to be rocked thereon by manual effort. This pawl is adapted to hold the ratchet wheel against movement. The ratchet wheel 24 is provided with a series of circumferentially disposed openings for the reception of a nail or other tool whereby the spring can be tightened. Owing to the slot 7 in the casing it is possible to tighten the spring while the door is closed.
The improved door spring is especially useful in attaching screen doors to door casings and renders the usual spacingcleats unnecessary.
Having described my invention I claim Ahinge comprising in combination a pair of hlnge leaves having right angularly disposed perforated arms, a pintle pivotally connecting said leaves, one of said leaves constructed to be attached to a door, the other of said leaves comprising two sections, one section constructed to be attached to a door'casing and having inwardly projecting Patented Get. 24., 1911.-
