To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J. BEHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of IVayne, State of Michitory in operation than the 'dooifl check therein described. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved flexible member for use'in door checks of this type. In my said prior patent, I have shown a cable as the flexible member, and have employed the word cable to cover any flexible member capable of performing the necessary functions. In my present application, I prefer to employ a flexible member composed of a series of leaves of spring material and havin at one or both ends to receive a cross member forming a head for contact with the thimble which limits the movement of the door check.
In the drawings, I have shown my invention as applied particularly to the doors of an automobile because that is the particular use for which the invention is intended.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of this specification.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the door check embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2,2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a spring member. embodying my invention.
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the spring member shown in Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings, at 11 is shown a pillar to which a door is secured and at 12 is shown a part of the frame of a door. At 13 and 14 are shown two hinge an eye formed members having a pintle "15. The said hinge members are secured to the pillar and frame in the ordinary manner by screws 16. Each hinge member, is cast or stamped in the form shown in Figure 2 with an integral tubular portion 17 which is interiorly screw-threaded as shown at 18. A hole 20 is bored in the post or pillar, as the'case may be, andreceives the tubular portion of the hinge member, so that the hinge occupies its ordinary position. -Within the tubular portion of the hinge member is a screw-threaded thimble 21 which is slotted,
as shown at 22 to receive a spanner, wrench or other convenient tool by means of which the position of the thimble 21 and the tubu: lar member17 may be adjusted. At 23 is shown" a flexible member passing through the holes 4 in said thimbles and provided at each end with a head5 which, in the form shown in the drawings, is a cross member. Interposed between the heads 5 ofthe flexible member 23 and the thimble 21 are springs 7 and washers 8. The springs 7 form cushions and thus eliminate the jar to the parts when the door is opened.
The flexible member 23 is conveniently made from two U-shaped pieces the respective legs of which are numbered 26, 27, 28 and 29. The said U-shaped members form eyes at opposite ends to receive the heads" 5'. In practice, the layers of spring material are riveted or spot-welded together as shown at 32. The heads 5 are fast in the eyes 30- and'31 and contact with the washers 8, 8 against which rest one end of the springs 7, the other end being against the thimbles 21, 21 when the door is opened, as shown in Figure'2.
What I claim is 1. In combination, a pair of hinge leaves, i
there being a tubular portion extending at right angles to the plane of the leaf of the hinge member, means for securing the leaf to the member to which the hinge is to be attached, a thimble screw threaded and adjust-able lengthwise in said tubular portion, a ,flexible member extending through said thimble and having a head on the end to prevent the flexible member being withdrawn from said thimble, and a cushion. I
member between the said head and the end of the thimble.
2. In combination, a pair of hinge-members each of which is provided with a tubular portion extending at right angles to 10 both lea tive thimbles'.
the leaf of the hinge member and integral therewith, and having a flange in the same plane as the plane of the hinge member, said flange being formed with screw holes to enable it to be screwed to the member to which it is to be attached, said tubular portions being interiorly screw-threaded, a thimble secured in each of said tubular portions, a flexible member extending through of said thimbles and having a head on each end, and cushioning means between the said heads and the ends of the respec- 3. In combination, a pair ofhinge members each of which is provided with a tubular ortion extending at right angles to the f of the hinge member, means for securing said leaf to the member'to which the hinge is to be attached, said tubular portions being interio'rly screw-threaded, a thimble secured in each of saidtubnlar portions, a flexible member composed of spring metal which extends through said thimbles and is formed with an eye at each end, and a cross-head inserted in each of said eyes to prevent the flexible member from being withdrawn from said thimble.
4. The flexible member for a doorcheck which comprises a plurality of superposed strips of metal provided with a head at each en v 5. The flexible member for a door check which comprises a plurality of superposed strips of metal formed into-an eye at the end and a cross member in said eye.
6. The flexible member for a door check which comprises two U-shaped strips of metal each bent to form an eye, the legs of said U-shaped strips being superposed on each other with the eyes at opposite ends and means for securingsaid legs together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WALTER- J. BEHN.
