HINGE,

d i T Julius; mmh Indamlwn wihxessaas 5. flaw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS TRITSCH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS TRITSGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hinges of the class adapted to use for doors or for other purposes, and the objects of my improvements are to provide means for adjusting a door vertically; to provide reversible means for moving and maintaining the hinge in diiferent longitudinal positions; to provide a reversible hinge with means for securing it in different positions of longitudinal adjustment, and to provide simple and durable construction and assemblage of the various members for securing facility of attachment and operation and efficiency of action. These objects are attained in the following described manner as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hinge embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the line oa of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line bb of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary hinge member formed with holes 2 and secured to the edge of a door 3 by means of screws 4 in the usual manner. A similar hinge member or leaf 5 movably secured to member 1 by means of a removable pintle 6 is formed with longitudinal slots 7 corresponding with holes 2 in member 1.
A clamping plate 8 covering plate 5 is formed with holes 9 to register with slots 7 and with an inwardly turned lip 11 on its lower end wherein an adjustable screw 12 is threaded. Said plate may be supported by means of said lip on the lower edge of a mortise 13 formed in the door frame 14 which mortise is somewhat longer than is member Said member being supported within said mortise withits lower edge on the adjusting screw may be securely clamped to the door frame in different positions of vertical adjustment under the clamping plate by means of screws 15 being inserted through the corresponding holes and slots 9 and 7. An additional hole 16 in plate 8 is intended to register with the middle slot in member 5 when said member is placed Specification of Letters Patent.

thereunder in an inverted position. A notch 17 formed in the door frame permits access by an adjusting tool to the head of the ad usting screw.
The operation is evident in that the hinges do not need to be so accurately fitted to the door or the frame and that the hinges with the door may by means of the adjusting screws be adjusted vertically at any time to overcome any sagging or binding of its lower edge on the door step.
Having fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2- 1. In an adjustable hinge the combination of a hinge leaf, a clamping plate, means for moving and maintaining the one longitudinally in relation to the other, and means for clamping said member and said plate together.
2. In an adjustable hinge the combination of a hinge leaf, a clamping plate, an adjusting screw therein for adjusting the one longitudinally in relation to the other member and means for clamping the member and plate in different relative longitudinal adjustment-s.
3. In an adjustable hinge the combination with a hinge leaf formed with slots, of a clamping plate formed with screw holes adapted to register with said slots and with a ledge on one of its ends and an adjusting screw in the ledge.
4. In an adjustable hinge the combination of a hinge leaf formed with longitudinal slots, a clamping plate formed with holes adapted to register with the slots and also formed with a ledge on one of its ends, and a screw adjustably secured in the ledge.
5. In an adjustable hinge the combination of a hinge leaf formed with slots, a reversible clamping plate formed with holes adapted to register with the slots in either of reversed positions on said member, and an adjusting screw in the plate for moving and maintaining the member and the plate in relative different positions of longitudinal adjustment.
