HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed July 8, 1918. Serial No. 243,948.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Hnnzoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a hinge and has for its object to produce a hinge especially adapted for use on fine furniture, as for example, phonograph cabinets and the like, wherein the hinge is required to be of such form that the door of the cabinet can open back of the frame and when closed the hinge will return the door to such position that the edge of the door will be offset with respect to the edge of the-frame, that is to say, the outer surface of the door will be in-set slightly into the frame, whereby an artistic paneled effect is given to the front of the cabinet.
A further object is to provide a hinge that shall be strong and capable of supporting a heavy weight, the construction of the hinge being such that the hinge leaves are supported and reinforced by the wood of the door and frame respectively.
With the above and certain other objects in view, which will appear later in the specification, my invention comprises the devices described and claimed and the equivalents thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic top plan view of a frame and door with my improved hinge attached, the door shown in its closed position.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same the door partly open.
Fig. 3 is a. similar view showing the door full open.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the hinge as it appears when viewed in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively details of the mortises formed in the frame and door, to receive the hinge plates.
As is clearly shown in the drawings, 1 represents the frame of the cabinet and 2 the door which is hinged to the frame. The hinge consists in a pintle 3, which passes through the upper leaf 4, and the lower leaf 5 of the hinge, as shown in Fig. 4. The upparts with per leaf of the hinge is received in a mortise 6 formed in the door 2, the upper surface of the leaf 4 bearing against the end wood, so that the weight of the door is supported directly upon the upper face of the leaf 4. The outer end of the leaf is bent upwardly at right angles to form a plate 7, which is received in a mortise 8 formed in the door 2 and is secured by means of screws 9.
The lower leaf 5 of the hinge extends, as shown in Fig. 2, from the pintle to about the middle of the Width of the frame 1 and its end is bent up at right angles to form a plate 10, which is screwed to the frame 1.
It will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 that the upper leaf 4 is concealed within the upper part of mortise 6 and when the door is closed the lower leaf 5 will be folded back and received in the lower part of the same mortise 6, so that when the door is closed, both of the leaves are received in the mortise 6 and are completely concealed therein, also that the weight of the door is carried directly upon the leaf 4, which is strongly supported so as to relieve thescrews 9 of undue strain.
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be noted that when the door is closed, the pintle 3 lies one side of the jamb and in front of the door and that there is no leaf mortise in frame-member 1. This enables the corner of frame-member 1, as at 11, to be shaped in the form of an ornamental bead and that this bead does not have to be out or mortised in order to apply the hinge 3, so that the artistic effect of the bead is attained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a door and its frame, a hinge comprising a pintle located exterior to said door and at one side of the edge of said frame, said hinge comprising an upper leaf member, one end of which is bent at a right angle with the plane of said leaf, said end and leaf received in an L-shaped mortise formed in said door, a lower leaf having one end bent upward and received in a mortise formed in said frame, said lower leaf when in closed position lying against said upper leaf and received in said mortise formed in said door.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
JOHN HERZOG.
