Description

E. H. ELLISON.
WINDOW HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 30. 1920.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
- 15 17 1a 16 m VII I is UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD a. ELLISON, or JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, 'hssmNoR TO INTERNATIONAL cAsEMEN'r COMPANY, OE JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION.
WINDOW-HINGE.
Application filed June 30,
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ELLrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Jamestown, in the county of 5 Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain .-new,and useful Improvements in Window-Hinges, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to hinges for window sash, and particularly on heavy casement windows to provide for the Opening of the same so as to admit to both sides of the sash when in the open position and to hold said sash in the openposition at any desired angle, folding into small space alongside the sash when closed; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinationshereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a window frame and sash with the improved hinge thereon in right and left formation at the top and bottom of the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the hinge and portions of the window frame and" sash in the open position showing the braced hinge support for the windowv sash in said open position. Fig. 3 is a similar perspective view showing the sash in the closed posi- 30 tion, the open position being shown in dotted outline. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the sash plate with the attaching lugs th reon. Fig: 5 is a plan view of the slotted plate on the window ,frame before attachment thereto, showing the-angular end of' said slot which draws and binds the window sash against the frame.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral designates the window frame, and the numeral 11 the window sash. Ehe window frame 10 has the plate 12 attached on the ends of the same, having a lengthwise slot 13 therein, a lengthened hinge butt 1 1 being attached on the lateral sides adjacent the corner near which the plate 12 has been attached.
A sashplate 15 is attached to the front face of the sash 11 beneath the nlate 12 and has the round lug 16 thereon which slidably engages in the slot 13, and the spaced lugs 17 on the front face of the plate 15 to pivotally receive therebetween one end of the link butt or hinge part 18, the other end he 55 ing pivotally attached to the lug 19 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

butt 14. by means of the pin20 to form the hinge knuckle.
It is now apparent that with the top and bottom hinges formed in rights and lefts, the sash 11 can be hinged to the frame 10 with the plates 12 on the top and bottom ends of said frame 10 and the hinge butt parts 14. attached to the rear lateral edge of said frame 10 near the upper and lower corners, and the sash plates 15 attached to 66 the corners of the sash-11 and connected to-- said butts 14 by the pivotallyattached link butts 18, permitting the free swinging of the sash 11 on said hinges, theround lugs 16 sliding backward and forward in .the 70 lengthwise slots 13.
lit is also apparent that the length of the plates 12 and slots 13 should be proportioned to the length of the link 18 so as to open the sash ll to any desired degree, and that said link butts 18 will hold the sash 11 in the open position, firmly supporting and bracing'the same as against gusts of wind or other strains, the sliding attachment to the window frame 10 permitting free access to both sides of the sashin order to clean the window in said sash; also that said hinge parts close into the fiat or non-extending position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, holdlng and bracing said window in the closed position as well aS being ready for quick opening and bracing in said open position.
The right and left or top and bottom hinges are so shaped as to extend out'onto the sash, but not to encroach upon the glassfilled lighting area within said sash. Toward this end, the link butt 18 is made angular in shape so that it lies flat against the sash plate 15 when in the closed position.
Said link butt is attached to the butt 14- preferably by a strong pintle 20 which is headed at each end, the opposite end of the link butt 18 being attached to the lugs 17 on the sash plate 15 in a similar manner, thereby makingv it diflicult to detach said link butt when the window is in the closed position.
, The slot 13 in the plate 12'is shaped with an end 21 which is inclined toward the window frame at the end adj acentthe corner so that When the sash is in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 3 the lug 16 will enter said inclined end and ind the window sash 11 firmly against the frame 10, making it as nearly air tight as possible by thus binding at both the top and bottom rear corners of guide it, the word bracing being here used heavy angular in the sense of holding the metallic sash firmly inline while opening and closing the same and to assist in holding the sash at any point in opening or closing the same. v
I claim as new:
1. A window frame, a window sash fitting in said frame, a plate attached to said window frame adjacent the rear corner thereof having a lengthwise slot therein, a sash plate attached to the front of said window sash having a lug adjacent the corner of said sash slidably mountable in said lengthwise slot in said plate, a hinge butt attached to said window frame adjacent said corner,
and a link hingingly connecting said butt and sash plate to actuate and brace said sash in opening and closing the same.
2. A window frame, a window sash fitting in said frame, a plate attached to said window frame adjacent the rear corner thereof having a lengthwise slot therein with its adj acent end inclined toward said window frame rear corner, a sash plate attached to the front of said window sash having a lug adjacent the rear corner of said sash slidably mountable in said lengthwise slot in said plate and into said inclined end to bind said window sash against the said window frame, a hinge butt attached to said window frame adjacent said corner, and alink lnngingly connecting sald butt and sash,
plate to actuate and brace ing and closing the same.
n testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD H, ELLISON.
