Shaft 24 may be freely removable upward from plates I9 and 20, or it may be permanently fixed in said plates as desired. A seamless tube 25 surrounds and rotates vertically around shaft 24.
In some embodiments, thrust bearings, generally designated 26 and 21, may be interposed between tube 25 and plates I9 and 20, respectively, to minimise rotational friction, while in other embodiments, tube 25 may extend to plates I9 and 2B, the thrust bearings being omitted. Welded or otherwise connected to tube 25 is an outwardly horizontally extendin shaft 28, tube 25 having a suitable recess to accommodate the rearward portion of shaft 28. If desired, tube 25 may be dispensed with and shaft 28 may be connected directly to shaft 24 which would rotate within plates I9 and 20.
Although members 24 and 28 are illustrated in Fig. 2 as being hollow, said elements may alternatively be of solid construction.
The door portion of the mounting comprises bracket 25 bolted or otherwise attached to the side edge of door I3 and having two perpendicular ears 3I and 32 extending in parallel vertical planes. Said ears have apertures 33 and 34 respectively, through which shaft 28 slidably extends. Encircling pin 28 is a shaft collar 35 between ears 3i and 32 of bracket 29. Collar 35 has an aperture 36 accommodating a set screw for fixing collar 35 in position on shaft 28.
It will be seen that door I3 is movable laterally relative to the mounting on cabinet II by virtue of ears 3I and 32 extending longitudinally on shaft 28. In order to prevent said cars from moving too far outward on shaft 28, collar 35 is secured and fixed in position by tightening set screw 31 in aperture 36. the lower end of said set screw (not shown), impinging upon and engaging shaft 28. Hence the outer motion of door I3 from cabinet I I is limited while at the same time sufficient clearance is given to permit gasket IE to move away from the chamber opening.
Although door I3 swings pivotally upon pin 24, the region of said door closest to the vertical axis of shaft 24 is movable laterally relative to the face of chamber I I and the chamber opening I5. Hence, when door I3 is swung into position opposite chamber opening I5, said door may then be urged against chamber I I with equal pressure being exerted upon all areas of said door, and
consequently, an even pressure is exerted upon all parts of the gasket I6, thus ensuring an even seal around the chamber opening and. ensuring even wear upon said gasket.
Door I3 is secured to cabinet I I by means of latch mechanisms on both sides of said door. Although two latches, generally designated 38, are shown, one on each side of said door, in some embodiments where especially heavy and large doors are involved, more than one latch may be provided for each side of the door.
The latch mechanism 38 comprises a bracket 4i bolted or otherwise secured to the face of the cabinet. Horizontally extending connecting strips 42 are pivotally connected to said bracket by means of 'a-hinge pin 43 positioned in a forwardly extending hinge post 44 on bracket 4|. Connected between connecting strips 42 is a bar 45 to the inner end of which is connected the bolt 46 which is adjustably threadable into nut 41 connected to said bar. shown, adapted to accommodate the end of bolt 46. Pivotally connected to bar 45 is a handle 48,
which is normally in the lowered position as 4 shown in Figs. 3 and 5. Said handle 48 is liftable to extend in a straight line with connecting strips 42 to provide increased leverage for the latch when it is brought into play to close the door upon the cabinet.
Bolted or otherwise connected to the side edges of door I3 is a plate 49 to which is connected a cam plate 5| having an outwardly extending cam 52. A curved cam surface 53 on the forward edge of cam 52 is engageable by the head of bolt 46 when latch 38 is swung around to secure door I3 to cabinet II. It will be noted that bolt 46 may be adjusted inwardly or outwardly in order to provide the appropriate pressure upon gasket I6. Should gasket I6 undergo some wear or lose some of its resiliency, bolt 46 may be adjusted to press upon the cam 52 to urge door I3 closer to cabinet I I, thereby bringing greater pressure on gasket l6.
When latches 38 are swung outwardly to release door I3, said door may move laterally away from the face of cabinet II, since ears 3| and 32 of bracket 29 move outwardly longitudinally upon the shaft 28, after which the door may be swung pivotally on hinge 11. Conversely, when the door is to be closed, it moves pivotally towards cabinet I I to face the chamber opening I5. The door is then pressed toward the chamber opening I5, this movement being permitted by the arrangement of cars 3i and 32 moving inwardly on shaft 28, after which latches 38 are swung toward cams 52 to secure the door in position and to seal off the chamber opening.
In the specification, I have explained the principles of my invention, and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying those principles, so as to distinguish my invention from other inventions; and I have particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed the part, mode or combination which I claim as my invention or discovery.
While I have shown and described certain preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as will be clear to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A hinge for a cabinet door comprising a door portion and a cabinet portion, said cabinet portion comprising a bracket attachable to the face of said cabinet, a vertical member rotatably secured on said bracket, a shaft connected to and extending horizontally from said vertical member, a bracket connectible to the side of said door, a pair of outwardly horizontally extending ears on said bracket, apertures in said ears being adapted to slide over said horizontally ex tending shaft and to be supported thereby, a ring encircling said horizontally extending shaft, said ring being positioned between said ears, and a screw in said ring, said screw being adapted to secure said ring in a desired position on said shaft.

A hinge for a cabinet door comprising a bracket, a pair of horizontal members attached to said bracket, a vertical shaft connected between said horizontal members, a sleeve rotatably mounted around said vertical shaft, a horizontal shaft connected to said sleeve, a second bracket, a pair of ears extending perpendicularly from said bracket and apertures in said ears adapted to engage said horizontal shaft, a thrust bearing between each end of said sleeve and a respective horizontal member, a ring surrounding said horizontal shaft and positioned between said pair of ears, and screw means for fixing said ring in a desired position upon said horizontal shaft.
