Abstract

840,661. Latches. CASSEY Ltd., W. Feb. 6, 1958 [Feb. 6, 1957], No. 4036/57. Classes 44 and 65(1). A door or liked hinged panel, e.g. a door of a refrigeration chamber, is provided with one or more latching units each preferably comprising a pair of elements namely, a spring-loaded bolt 22 located within a casing 18 on the door frame 11 and an L-shaped bracket 28 adjustably mounted on a serrated base plate 27 secured to the door and carrying a roller 31 which is freely rotatable about a vertical axis and is adapted, during the final stages of door closure, to cooperate with the head 21 of the bolt 22 in an over-dead-centre relationship. As shown, the head 21 of the bolt 22 is tapered towards its outer end and presents an outer vertical planar face 32 at about 45 degrees to the plane of the frame 11, an intermediate normal face 34, and an inner face 33 inclined at 25 degrees, so that greater force is required to retract the bolt 22 during opening of the door than when the latter is being closed. This greater force is applied by an operating unit comprising a support 35 in which is mounted a swinging lever 43 by means of a pivot bolt 41, the upper end of the lever having an upwardly-extending handle 44 and the lower end being provided with a freely rotatable roller 45 adapted to be forced into contact with a bearing plate 52 on the door frame 11. A second operating unit is mounted on the inside of the door, Fig. 4 (not shown), this unit comprising a horizontal pivoted lever provided at one end with a long handle and at the other end with a nose 58 which, in the closed position of the door, abuts a block secured to the frame 11.
