Abstract

439,132. Hinges; sliding bolts. WILLIAMS, B. A., and WILLIAMS & WILLIAMS, Ltd., Liverpool Road, Chester. Aug. 10, 1934, No. 23111. [Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] In a hinge for connecting together a pair of win. dow sashes, one of which is hinged, at the side away from the connection, tc the frame while the other has sliding and swinging engagement with the frame at its free edge to form a sliding-folding window as described in Specification 441,637, the hinge pin is free for limited endwise movement without complete withdrawal from any of the hinge parts, and is arranged to project in one position to act as a bolt engaging the window frame to hold the sashes in the closed position. In the arrangement shown, one sash 12 carries two hinge barrels 13, while the other sash 11 has a barrel 2 fitting between the barrels 1. The hinge pin 4, connecting the barrels, has a handle 6 fixed to its lower end and a screw 10 engaging a helical slot in the barrel 2, so that when the pin is rotated by the handle it is forced to move axially by the screw 10 engaging the slot. In its upper position shown, the pin 4 projects behind the upper window frame member 13, engaging a plate 14 fixed thereon to prevent opening of the sashes. In a modification, the handle 6 is replaced by an enlarged head on the screw 10. Washers of brass or gunmetal are preferably interposed between the hinge barrels.
