A stay fitting for a window hinged along its upper horizontal edge e.g. a caravan window, comprises a channel slide 5 adapted to be fixed in a vertical position to a portion 2 of a supporting structure defining the side of a window opening, a stay arm 4 one end of which is pivotally attached at 7 to a bracket 8 on the window 1 while the other end is pivotally mounted upon a pin 9 projecting from a slider block 10 engaged within the channel slide 5, and a tension spring 12 of an appropriate loading to assist in supporting the window when open is anchored at one end to the pin 9 on the slider and at its other end to a peg 11 mounted on the slide channel 5. Once the locking devices holding the window closed have been released, the window opens automatically under the influence of the spring 12 and is closed by pulling manually against the spring 12. As shown in Fig. 3, the hooked lower end 12a of the spring 12 is sandwiched between washers 14 and 15 on pin 9 which is set in the slider block 10. The slide 5 and tension spring 12 may be encased in a casing C. The pin 9 is screw threaded to take a knob 13. When the knob 13 is tightened up the knob 13 and associated washers 14, 15 and 16 function as a friction lock to secure the slider block 10 and stay arm 4 and hence the window F in any desired position. In a modification (Figs. 4 to 6 not shown), the slide is an outer tube 17 of square cross section, the spring 20 is encased in an inner tube 22 of circular cross section and is attached at one end to a bolt 21 which slides in a slot 17a formed in the outer tube 17. A knob 23 screws onto the end of the bolt 21.
