Application filed December 18, 1924. Serial No. 756,640.
My invention has for its object a hinge particularly applicable to folding furniture whereby when outfolded a close joint between thetwo hinged members is secured without any projecting parts of the hinged structure, and when the parts are folded together, a clearance space between the two is obtained, enabling ironing pads, table cloths, or the liketo be folded in place.
Other objects will appear from the drawings and specification which follow.
The hinge of my invention is particularly applicable to folding kitchen furniture and the like although it may be advantageously used in other structures.
By referring to the accompanying drawings my invention will be made clear.
Fig. 1 is a side view of my hinge in extended or outfolded position with the front laminations removed to better show the interior construction.
Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 1 with the hinge leaves folded. and showing the clearance space between. V
Fig. 3 illustrates the application of my hinge to a pair of table or ironing board members in folded position.
Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 3 except the hinged parts are outfolded.
Throughout the figures similar numerals refer to identical parts.
My hinge consists preferably of leaves 1, 2, respectively, a link member 3 and pintles 4, 5. The leaves are preferably laminated to simplify and cheapen the manufacture consisting of three plates 6, 7, 8 in the leaf 1 and 9, 10, 11 in leaf 2; or the recess occupied by the link 3 may be milled from the leaf ends or cast therein.
Plates 6 and 9 are bevelled on their ends V and come together as plain surfaces when the parts. are outfolded, as shown by the dotted line 12 in Fig. 1. Y I
is outfolded as shown'in Figs. 1 and '4 the contacting of the laminations on the lines 12 and 13 and with the link 3 on the lines seen that when the hingeseas'l 14, 15 provide resisting 'abutments niaint-aimng the straight alignment of the outp folded hinge and the surface of any bench,
table or other furniture member, indicated as consisting of the parts 20,21; and when the parts 20, 21 are folded over as shown in Fig. 3, they are spaced apart allowing clearance therebetween as shown at 22, Fig. 2, to allow for a table cloth, ironingpad or other cover or surface inequality.
While I have shown my hinge as. builtup of laminations for convenience and cheapness of construction and for smooth external surfaces when the hinge'is in the extended position, it will now be clear that the assembled members 1, 2 may instead be. cast or milled with the end portions adapted to contact on the lines 12, 14, 15 respectively 7 without building up the entire leaf of laminations. a
Variations may also be employed in the angle of the contacting ends 12, the spacing of the pintles 4, 5 or other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention','and I desire to be under-, stood as claiming all such.
I claim: z
1. A hinge for the side edge of a foldingboard comprising two elongated leaves adapted for screwing to the ed ge'of the board at the end of the folding jointand at right angles thereto, a link member, pintles between each end of said link and one end of said leaves respectively, said leaves being recessed on their ends for said link and having extended side portions on both sides of the link adapted to contact one an other at substantially the center of the link on'one. side thereof and off center at a bevel angle on the other side of the link when the hinge is'opened' with its leaves extended in alignment. I
2. Aflush hinge for a folding table com- 1 prising a pair of flat elongated plates adapted to bescrewed to the-edges of the table at the end of the folding joint andat right angles to the joint, said plates being ar ranged endwise in flush aligned abutting relation when the hinge is fully openand each being formed with a recess on its abutting end, a flatlink in the recess pivotally the plates and adapted to abut the ends of j the recess when the hinge is opened flat and to space the plates .edgewise throughout connectedby spaced pivots respectively to their length when the hinge is closed upon itself.v
3. A folding board combination comprising two flat boards hinged at opposite edges to one another to fold from abutting edge relation to an overlying-parallel position, the abutting edges of the boards being beveled with respect to the face of the boards and the hinges being flush hinges provided With members beveled to substantially coincide with the beveled ends of the boards and to abut With one another when the boards are opened out to flat position.
