Description

A. JOHNSON. uo'oR BUTT.
APPLICATION FILED APR. I7. 1918.

FFICE."
AXEL JOHNSON, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-BUTT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 15M 8.
Application filed. April 17, 1918. Serial No. 229.140.
To all, whom it may concern Beat known that I, Axel. Jonxsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of *aukegan, in the county of Lake and 7 State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Butts. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door hinges or butts, and the object thereof is to provide a device which may be adjustable to conform to shrinkage or swelling of the door after the same has been hung in its normal position. It is well known that afte a door has been hung, no matter how carefully or skilfully, especially in connection with new construction, the settling of walls, shrinkage or swelling of the door caused by in'iperfect seasoning or by variations of moisture usually compel some further adjustment. Such changes or ad ustments frequently result in mar-ring of the door and the door finish by planing the edges thereof or by resetting the strike with which the bolts are engaged. By means of my invention, which is simple and inexpensive, and which is of such character that it is not observable and in no way changes the'general appearance of the door hangers, a means is provided by which complete re-adjustment of the door in the casing may be readily and quickly made without marringthe door or the door cases in anyrespect, and without the use'of any other tool than a screw driver.
The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings. in'which Figure 1 is an elevation of a door and door easing;
Fig. 2 is-a'section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are views on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 respectively of Fig. 2;
Fig. his an enlarged sectional view on line 5:i of Fig. 4.
Further describing my invention with reference to the drawings, in which like charactersof reference denote like parts throughout: 1 is a door and 2 is a door casing therefor, in which the door is supported upon the butts 3 in the usual manner. Said butts comprise the leaves or plates 4 and 5, hinged upoir'the pintles (3. The leaves -Ll: may be secured to the door jamb by the screws 5. In adjustable relation to that leaf of the hinge hich is applied to the door jamb I provide an anchor plate 7 having openings through whichscrews as at 8 may be passed to secure it to the door jamb. and further openings as 5- to accommodate screws 5. Said anchor plate is removably attached to the stationary hinge leaf or plate by means of screws as shown in Fig. 5. having a threaded body portion 9, which extends outwardly from the face of the plate. and a neck 10 which is loosely received in the plate. Said neck may be secured to the plate by a countersunk member 11. the top of which is substantially flush with the back of the anchor plate. The body portion 9 is received in a threaded opening in the hinge leaf 4-. and has a slot 12 by which it may be adjusted from the out.- side of the said hinge leaf.
ln putting my invention in practice, the doc" is fitted to the frame i the usual manner. making full allowance for swellin'; of the wood which may be anticipated. 'lhe anchor plates are secured rigidly to the cas- A in; and the screws 8) are engaged with the hinge leaves 4.. \Vhen the screws are put in place complete adjustment of the butts to compensate for displacements or changes is provided. All that is necessary is to loosen the screws 5'. turn the screws f to makethe proper adjustment of the leaf 4 relatively to the anchor plate 7 and set the screws 5' firmly home. It is further pointed out that this device may be used with special advantage on French windows and doors in which front edge adjustments are very ditlicultor practically impossible.
I claim:
'1. In a door butt; the combination with the stationary leaf thereof, of an anchor plate detachable from the stationary leaf and adapted to be rigidly secured to a door jamb, means secured to thcanchor plate and screwtlireadcdly engaging said stationary leaf for relative adjustment between the same and the, anchor plate, and means for rigidly connccting the said stationary leaf to the door jamb. I
2. In a door butt; the combination with the stationary leaf or plate thereof. of an anchor plat adapted to be rigidly attached to a door jamb, a headless screw having one end revolubly attached to theanchor plate means for rigidly connecting said leaf to a door jamb.
In a door butt; the combination with the stationary leaf or plate thereof, of a n independent anchor plate adapted to be rigidly attached to a door jamb, a screw having a neck within and a member to engage said anchor plate and havin a shonldered headless body portion three edly engaging the stationaryhingeplete for the adjustable "spaoing of said plates, and means for rigidly connecting said leaf to a door jamb.
In'witness whereof I have hereunto set 1 my hand at Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 15th day of April; 1918.
