Description

June 14., 1960 H. u. HANSEN ADJUSTABLE DOOR HINGE Filed Oct. 11, 1956 INVENTOR E225 Z7 Z r277 E2150:
ATTORNEY United States Patent ADJUSTABLE DOOR HINGE Hans Ulrik Hansen, 4208 Victoria Ave., Los Angeies, Calif.
Filed Oct. 11, 1956, Scr. No. 615,354
2 Claims. (Cl. 16-431) This invention relates to a door-hinge of the butt type embodying a pair of leaf sections united by a pintle such as are commonly employed in hingedly mounting swinging doors in casings for horizontal swinging movement with one of the leaf sections countersunk in an edge of the door and the other leaf section countersunk in the jamb of the door casing, the invention more particularly pertaining to hinges of the above character embodying a means whereby the leaf sections thereof may be adjusted to compensate for sagging of the door with consequent misalignment with its casing.
Various constructions have heretofore been devised for embodiment in the leaf sections of a hingle whereby the sections may be adjusted on a door jamb to effect alignment of the door relative to its casing so as to avoid the use of shims as commonly employed for such purpose, but such constructions have notbeen standardized nor come into extensive use probably because of prohibitive cost of manufacture with consequent increase in selling price or cost to the consumer as compared with the costs incident to the common butt hinges now on the market.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an adjustable door-hinge for the purpose specified which is so formed as not to materially increase its cost of production relative to that of conventional non-adjustable hinges.
Another object is to provide a means for rendering the leaf sections of a hinge adjustable to vary the position of the hinge pintle laterally forward or back as occasion may require to vary the tilt of the door carried thereon relative to its casing, which means is of such character that it may be designed for application to a conventional hinge as an attachment shereto either under production or on-the-job, or which may be embodied as an integral part of the hinge in the course of manufacture thereof.
With the foregoing objects in view together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention resides in the parts and in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and as illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is an isometric view of a door-hinge showing the rear faces of the leaves thereof with the invention applied:
Fig. 2 is a view in cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1:
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in section of one of the hinge leaf sections taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, show ing it as mounted on a jamo and depicting the manner of effecting adjustment thereof:
Fig. 4 is an isometric view of a modified form of the invention showing it as an embodiment of the hinge leaf section; and
Fig. 5 is an end view of the hinge shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings more specifically AA indicate the pair of flat rectangular leaf sections of a hinge which sections are of equal thickness throughout and are pivotally connected together by a pintle B in the usual Each leaf, section A is formed with screw receiving apertures here shown as three in number and embodying a single aperture C located intermediate the ends of the leaf section contiguous the outer margin thereof and also including a pair of apertures D-D spaced apart in alignment longitudinally of the leaf sections and located in inwardly and outwardly spaced relation to the aperture C. Manifestly the hinge leaf section may be equipped with any suitable number of screw receiving apertures but for adaptation to the present invention must essentially embody an arrangement of the apertures which will afford one or more apertures spaced relative to each other laterally of the leaf section.
The invention resides in providing the leaf section A with a single longitudinally extending narrow and shallow rib E protruding from the rear face of the section between the laterally oifset apertures CD, which rib is preferably arcuate in cross section to formra rocker when seated on the surface to which the leaf section is applied.
The rib E is characterized by having side margins which- In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 m3 the rib is shown as comprising a stripeof suitable material preferably metal which strip is arcuate in cross section and has a flat under face which is seated on the under-- side of the leaf section and is securely engaged therewith in any suitable manner as by means of an adhesive. The strip 6, constituting a rocker, extends parallel with the longitudinal margins of the leaf section preferably throughout the length 'ofthe latter as shown in Fig. 1. This construction is advantageous in that it may be carried out either in the factory in producing the hinge as an article of manufacture or it may be applied as an attachment to a conventional hinge, since a person of ordinary skill being supplied with the loose strip 6 may readily mount it on the leaf section.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the rib E constitutes an arcuate protrusion 7 which is formed integral with the leaf section as by a stamping operation which construction is effected in the manufacture of the hinge.
In the application and operation of the invention the hinge is mounted in the usual manner, one of the leaf Sections A being mounted on the edge of a door and the other leaf section being mounted on the door jamb with the leaf sections recessed and secured in place by the usual wood screws 8 and 9 screwed into the door jamb through the apertures C and D respectively.
In thus mounting a leaf section A the rocker m'b E thereon will seat along its outer portion or ridge and between its side portions on the bottom 10 of the recess 11 in which the leaf section is mounted, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the underside of the leaf section on opposite sides of the rib E will be slightly spaced by the rib from the bottom of the recess and will normally be disposed in parallel relation thereto with the ends of the leaf sections abutting the ends of the recess.
In eifccting alignment of the door with its casing, either when initially mounting the door or subsequent thereto, in event of sagging of the door such alignment is accomplished by tilting the leaf section A on the rocker rib E to laterally shift the axis of the pintle B either rearwardly, as indicated by the dotted lines a in Fig. 3, or forwardly as indiacted by the dotted lines b. This adjustment is effected by loosening the screw 8 and tightening the screws 9 to tilt the leaf rearwardly, as indicated by the dotted lines a or conversely by loosening the screws d and tightening the screw 8 to tilt the hinge leaf section A forwardly into the position indicated by screw 8 or 9 is then tightened to seat on the hinge leaf to then co-operate with its companion screws to securely hold the leaf section stationary in its adjusted position. In some instances adjustment of either one or the other ofthe leaf sections may only be required to effect align ment of the door -with its casing, but there may be occasions when it will be necessaryto adjust both leaf sections. p j
In order to obviate or at least minimize objectionable projection of the outer face of thehinge leaf relative to the surface face of the door or casing leading from the margin of'the recess 11 when the hinge leaf is mounted in :the recess in a tilted position on the rib E, the com hined thickness of the fiat leaf A and-the arcuate the tiltof a hinge leaf section witout the aid of shii'ns'and without materially increasing-the cost of the hinge.
While a specific embodimentof the invention has been shown and described, the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction set forth, and the invention embraces such changes, modifications and equivalents of thesparts and their formation and arrangeni 7 LfIn coinbiuationwith a hinge supporti g rtuszture having a hinge-leaf receiving recess embodying a'flatboe lines'b: eitherevent the previously loosened tom w allt a hinge including a leaf having aflat underside and having laterally off-set screw receiving apertures, a
rib projecting from the underside of said leaf extending longitudinally intermediate the laterally offset apertures, said ribhaving opposed side margins intersecting the leaf in spaced relation to said apertures and having an outer margin seated directly on the bottom wall of said recess and :then serving as arocker on which the leaf may be tilted laterally insaid recess to various positions, said leaf and rib having a combined thicknessnot exceeding the depth of said hinge leaf receiving recess,-and screws extending through saidapertures and engaging said leaf, said screws being directly engaged with the bottom wall of said recess contiguous the underside of the leaf and being tightened to holdsaid leaf against tilting on said rib.
2. A hinge leaf having a flat undersideand of equal thickness throughout and having laterally oifset screw receiving apertures, a single rib projecting" from the underside of said leaf and extending longitudinally intermediate the laterally off-set apertures, said rib havingopposed side margins intersectingthe surface of the underside of'the leaf in spaced relation to said apertures and having a transverselyrcunded outer margin for directlyseating on the surface-of a hinge supporting wall, said leaf being then-tiltable to various positions relative to a supporting wall, and screws'adaptedto be engaged insaid apertures and to be screwed directly into engage- I n in as. conic within-"the-purview of the appended claims' ment with a supporting Wall on which the leaf is mounted' References Cited in the file of this-patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 809,043 Bretzfelder Jan. 2,.1906
