Description
J. BLOOM Jan. 12, 1937.
HINGE Filed Aug. 13, 1936 P a r. l my INVENTOR Jacob fi/oom WORNEY Patented Jan. 12, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to hinges and relates particularly to hinges for cedar chests whereby the hinge may be easily attached or detached.
It is an object of my invention to provide a hinge which may be easily attached to the outside corner of a cedar chest and which will limit the swinging movement of the lid or top of the cedar chest to an open position. Hinges of this construction are found useful so that the lid may assume a vertical self-sustaining position.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described which is easily and economically produced, and which is sturdy and compact in construction.
With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and which will be more readily understood when the description is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. l is a fragmentary view of a cedar chest having my invention embodied on a corner and lid thereof.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l with the lid in open position, showing the movable portion of the hinge in a substantially vertical position.
Fig. 3 is an exploded view of the elements comprising my invention.
Referring now in greater detail to the drawing, I show in Fig. 1 a fragmentary portion of a cedar chest having a rear wall l0 joined to a side wall [2 and having a lid or top or cover M which is movable to an open or a closed position. Located upon the corner of the box is a stationary or fixed plate, generally designated as A, of my improved hinge. Pivotally mounted on the stationary plate A is a movable hinge plate, generally designated as B. The. stationary plate A has a portion l6 attached to the side wall l2 by means of screws or bolts ll, l8, and I9.
Bent at right angles to the plate portion I6 is a flange portion integrally formed therewith and designated as 20. The flange portion 20 of the stay or plate A is fastened by means of screws or bolts 2| and 22 to the rear wall ill of the chest.
The combined stop and holding screw or bolt H has a thick head which extends a definite amount from the outside face of the stay or fixed plate A for engagement by an extension 24 on the movable plate B.
A pintle or shaft 26, rigidly fastened to the plate A, has journaled or pivoted thereto the movable plate B.
The plate B has a portion 28 fastened to the inside corner of the lid by means of screws or bolts (not shown). The integrally united extension portion 24 of the plate B, formed at right angles to the portion 28, has a substantially central bearing 36 therein which interfits with the pintle 26. The extension 24 is extended so that an edge surface 30 is slightly extended from the plate portion 28 so that it engages the head of the stop i! when the lid is in a closed position as illustrated in Fig. l, but an edge 3| of the extension 24 engages the stop screw I! when the lid is in open position as illustrated in Fig. 2.
It is to be observed that the relationship of the hinge plates A and B, the edges of the cooperable extension 24, and the stop I! is such that the lid of the cedar chest remains open in substantially a vertical position so that the wall or any other object need not be used to support the lid. The edge surfaces 30 and 3| form an angle greater than apart.
If for any reason it should be desired to have the hinge revolve 270, it is only necessary to remove combined stop and holding screw l1, and the lid will be able to be oscillated from a horizontal position through 270 to a position parallel to the wall l0.
Although I have described my invention in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting.
I claim as my invention:-
A hinge comprising a pair of pivotally connected fixed and movable members having provision for connection with parts to be hinged together, a combined fastening and stop member, said combined member including an enlarged head projecting beyond the face of the fixed member, said combined member holding the fixed member of said pivotally connected members, and an extension on said other or movable member, said extension being adapted to engage the enlarged head of said combined fastening and stop member at a predetermined point of relative movement between the pivotally connected members whereby relative movement of the members is arrested.
JACOB BLOOM.
