oovnn BACK AND HINGE.
Application filed October 15,1926. Serial N0."'141,851.
This invention relates to a combined cover back and hinge 'lor wash tub covers or closures and has'for its object to provide a novel and improved means for connecting Said cover or closure whereby the hinges are concealed and presenting a neat appearance.
One of the objects of my invention isto provide in a cover back and hinge construction a novel and mproved means tor connecting a cover such as employed for wash tubs and the like wherein thehinge is totally concealed when said cover is closed presenting a smooth, even surtacegyet permitting said coverto be raised and swung up and over on the cover .back when desired.
Another object of my invention is to re vide-a-eover back preferably otenamel ware or of the same material 'as the'cover, including a novel and improved cooperating hinge wherein the flanged, abutting edge of the cover may lie flushwith the flanged edge or:
. the cover back in one position and permitting the hingedcover to be raised and swung over and on the cover backin a second posh tion.
construct a cover back and hinge which will be extremely simple, easily assembled, neat in appearance, practical, durable, comparatively cheap to manufacture, capable of universal use in connection with standard types of stationary washtubs and the like, and
otherwise possessing mechanical advantages over the ordinary typeof hingenow em-f ployed for the same purpose.
fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the many practical advantages and uses to which it is capable, and illustrating a preferred form of the invention in the annexed drawings,
Fig. 1' is a perspective cover back and the cover the hinges concealed.
Referring now to the drawings wherein View showing the when closed and Afurther' object of my invention" is to- To enable others skilled in the art to more like reference characters designate corre sponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the base and G the rear wallflota cover back,.said 1.'ear wall being disposed atright anglesto the base and itormed integral therewith, The base is provided with end flanges 7 and; angle plates 8 whereby the" cover back may be positioned on the sides and rear. wall of a tub, such as a' stationary wash tub, shown in dotted lines by Thebase of the cover back is also provided with a depending front flange-S) partially cut away at each end so as to permit the cover '10 and the connecting hinge to swing upwardly inthje'manner shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing. This operationfis effected by means of a double hinge construction comprising a plate,- 11 having an elongated slot- 12 therethrough and attached. to the portion of the flange ,9 adjacent the cut 13, by. meanso't the threaded screws bolts 14. and nuts 15. i
. The top edge of theJplate l1 rolled on itself tliorming a pivotal connection 16 for the straight end 17 of a hinge pin or rod extending beyond thelend'oli the plate, said rod being bent at right angles and crn'ved upwardly as'at 18 and'then continuing in a straight endportionlt) in the same plane as the opposite end portion. The complemen ta-ry section of the hinge comprises a plate 20 provided with an elongated slot 21 therethrough for connection to the inside face or surface of the flange 22 of the cover, being so connected thereto by. the threaded ole ments 23 and nuts 24. Y Y a 1 The plate QOfsformedwith atab 25 bent atright angles thereto, the inner edge of said tab being rolled on itselfas at 26 forming a hinge connection for the straight por tion 19 of the hinge pin or rod. The tab' is adapted to swing withthe curved portion of the rod through the cut out in the flange of the cover back and at the same time may also pivot on theend portion of the rod. Furthermore, since the pivotal connections for the straight portions of the hinge pin or rod are located at the top and bottom of the hinge plates respectively, it will be seen that the rear abutting flange of the cover and the depending flange of the cover back conceals the plates when the cover is closed. The top of the cover and the base of the cover back are therefore in the same horizontal plane forming a smooth surface from the front to ,the'back of thewash tub or basin.
It will be clearly understood and appreciated that the double hinge employedp'ermits the'cover to not only rotate on the hinge pin or rod but permits it to swing outwardly and upwardly over and on the base of the cover back. In other words" the 'cover'perinit's of a swinging movement relative to the base of the cover back but also a pivotal movement on the hinge pin or-rod Whereby it Inay'be moved to its full open position. r
While I have shown the ends of the plates extending Within the cut out portion of the depending flange itwill be understoodithat thewidth of thecut out portion should only be suflicient to perinit the free swinging moveinentof the curved portionof'the bent rod or hinge pin and the tab to which it is connected. However, the elongated slots in both the plates permit of sufficient adjust-1 nient to accommodate the screw or bolt holes in the depending flan Which the plates"arefastenech g V Havingshown and described'niy invention' WhatI now claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi' the U.
