Description

B. L. HYLTON v 2,758,315
COMMODE SEAT LID LIFTER Filed July 12, 1954 United States Patent Oflice 2,758,315 Patented Aug. 14, 1956 COMNIODE' SEAT LID LIFTER Barbara L. Hylton, Rand, W. Va.
Application July 12, 1954, Serial No. 442,660
1 Claim. (Cl. 4-251) The present invention relates generally to new and useful improvements in commodes and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means whereby the usual hinged lid or cover may be expeditiously raised or lowered without the necessity of touching said lid or cover with the hand.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a commode seat lid lifter of the aforementioned character which will interfere in no way with the application and proper fitting of a conventional cover.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a commode seat lid lifter of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, inconspicuous and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a commode equipped with a lid lifter embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure l; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates generally a conventional commode. The commode 5 includes a bowl 6 having mounted for vertical swinging movement thereon a seat 7 and the usual lid 8.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a bracket of metal or other suitable material which is designated generally by reference character 9. The bracket 9 includes on one end an apertured mounting plate 10 which is firmly secured beneath a side front portion of the lid 8 by countersunk screws 11.
Bracket 9 further includes a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion 12 which, as shown to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawing, extends outwardly beneath the edge or periphery of the lid 8. At its outer end, the bracket 9 terminates in a substantially oval, horizontally projecting concavo-convex handle 13 for the reception of the fingers.
It is thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. To raise the lid 8 to open position without touching same with the hand, the fingers are simply engaged beneath the handle 13. The lid may then be opened in an obvious manner. By reason of the substantially U-shaped intermediate portion 12, the marginal portion of the underside of the lid 8 is left free of the bracket 9, thus permitting a conventional cover to be readily applied to said lid without interference. This constitutes a highly important and desirable feature of the invention.
It is believed that the many advantages of a commode seat lid lifter constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a me ferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A commode seat lid lifter comprising: a substantially U-shaped bracket including an angularly extending apertured plate on one end for mounting said bracket on the underside of the lid, said bracket further comprising a substantially flat, horizontal bight portion spaced throughout and uniformly from the lower marginal portion of the lid and projecting outwardly beyond the periphery thereof for the reception of a removable lid cover therebetween, said bracket still further comprising a handle on its other end.
