BROOM HEAD HOLDER AND COVER Filed Feb. 19, 1954 JNVENTOR.
BY 4 Z United States Patent BROOM HEAD HOLDER AND COVER Alice A. Bergholt, Addison, Ill.
Application February 19, 1954, Serial No. 411,454
1 Claim. (Cl. 312-207) My invention relates to a holder and cover for broom heads, mop heads and the like.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a holder for the facile reception and withdrawal of a broom head, which when in use will protect the same.
My invention also contemplates such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred form of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. l is a front elevational view of the preferred embodiment of my broom head holder and cover; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Fig. 3 is a detailed vertical sectional view on line 33 on Fig. 1; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are front elevational views of modified forms of my broom head holder and cover.
The preferred embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a body member 10 having a front portion 11 and a rear portion 12 connected by side portions 13 and 14 joined by a bottom wall 15 said body member 10 has an open top 16.
Both my front and rear portions 11 and 12 are widest at their upper straight edges and extend downwardly and inwardly to curved lower ends. Side walls 13 and 14 also extend downwardly and inwardly to bottom wall 15 which is rounded.
Front portion 11 has a vertical slot 17 extending its entire extent and communicating with rounded opening 18 in bottom wall 15. A door 19 is connected to front face 11 by hinge 20 and is held normally in closed position, closing said slot 17 by spring 21.
Body member 10 may be attached to the wall of a closet or room by spaced screws 22. Other means of attachment may be employed such as a hole or hook in rear portion 12.
In use, my door 19 may be opened and a broom handle placed in slot 17 and drawn downwardly until the broom head is housed within the body member 10 with its bottom engaging bottom wall 15. Door 19 is released 2,820,685 Patented Jan. 21, 1958 and closed by action of spring 21. When the broom is to be used again, it is grasped by the handle and moved upwardly above the body member and the handle is moved through slot 17.
Another embodiment of my invention is to eliminate door 19 with its hinge 20 and spring 21 leaving slot 17, which is slightly wider than the diameter of a broom handle exposed.
To provide for situations where a broom head may be wet or very soiled, I provide my rear portion 12 with an upward extension 23 of a size slightly larger than that of a broom head.
In another embodiment, I eliminate front portion 11 leaving body member with an open front face to receive a broom head or whisk broom. To this embodiment I provide a door 24 hinged to one of side walls 13 or 14, to cover the open face. I also provide a closed top 25 to cover the open top of the body member 10.
My holder and cover may be made of plastic, or smooth metal for easy cleaning, lasting wear and economical construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A broom head holder and cover made of smooth material for easy cleaning, comprising a body member of broom head size having a front face and a rear face, connecting side walls and a bottom joined to said faces, said faces and side walls extending downwardly and inwardly to a curve at said bottom, said front face having a slot therethrough and said bottom having a curved hole communicating with said slot, said body member having an open top and being widest at its open top, said rear face having an integral extension of the same width at its top as the maximum width of the body member, said extension extending straight up above the open top of said body member and forming a splash plate of a size larger than the rear face of the body member to receive a soiled or wet broom head just before it is lowered into the body member, said slot and hole of said body member adapted to receive the handle of the broom and said open top permitting the broom head to be moved downwardly within the body member for removably housing the broom head therein, and spaced means for attaching said body member to a wall, said means being positioned below said splash plate, so as not to interfere with the broom head as it contacts said splash plate.
