To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Annnnr L. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Metal Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved metal receptacle, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a receptacle having automatic or gravity closed sectional covers and foot actuated means for raising any one section, this particular receptacle being especially designed for holding oily or otl'i-er waste rags, in factories, the raising of the lid sections being readily performed by the action of a foot of the party during passage by the receptacle for the dropping of the waste therein.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a metal receptacle, in which the lid is preferably made in two substantially semi-circular sections, each of which is provided with individually operated means for elevating one section at a time, the lower end of such means being slidably attached to and guided by a supporting leg of the receptacle.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a metal receptacle embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation taken from a treadle side thereof. Fig. 3 is a section through the two lids and the supporting hinge strip or plate. Fig. 4c is a section taken on line 4-4= of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cylindrical sheet metal receptacle, supported upon four legs 2, each one of which has the vertical plate 3, which is in alinement with the circumferential face of the receptacle and is secured to the receptacle.

Secured transversely and diametrically of the upper or top end of the receptacle by means of bolts 5 is a plate 4, which constitutes the lid carrying portion. The two semicircular lids 7 are each provided with the rim 8. which when the lids are closed surround the rim at the upper end of the receptacle 1. and thus neatly close the receptacle. The straight edges of the lids are rolled as at 9, and have mounted therein the reinforcing and lid carrying rod 10, and in order to hingedly secure the lid to the adjacent edge of the plate 4, a plurality of staples 11, embrace the edges 9, as illus trated in Fig. 3, apertures 12 and 13 being provided in the plate l; and lid 7 respectively for permitting the staples to form the mounting of the hinge for both lids and also to provide a means for connecting or anchoring the staples to the plate a. As the lids close by gravity, and as it is desirable to provide some means for elevating the lid without gripping the lid with the hand, a lug 14 formed on one end of the rod 10 engages the lid, so that the crank arm 15 provided with the eye 16 may be pulled upon and rocked to elevate the lid. To accomplish this, the eye 17 of the rod 18 is connected to the eye 16 of the cranltv 15, while the lower end of the rod 18 is twisted to form a detachable uiding eye 19 about the vertical plate 3 of one leg, two of the legs being thus employed. The eye 19 is then provided with the downwardly inclined portion 20 terminating in the foot receiving loop 21., which is formed in a plane at right angles to the plate 3. By this construction, it is evident that the depression of the treadle 21 by the foot will elevate the selected lid 7 to move it from the position as shown in Fig. 2 to that position shown in Fig. 1. By this means the necessity of manually lifting the lid by gripping the same with the hand is obviated, and the operator is permitted full use of both hands in opening a lid for access to the receptacle.

It will be noted that as the rod 18 is detachably connected to the crank 15 and by reason of the open loop or eye 19 is also detachably connected to the strip 3 that the rods 18 may be packed inside the receptacle during transportation; and also by reason of the fact that the hinging plate 4: is connected by stove bolts 5, to the receptacle, the plate a with the two lids 7, may also be placed inside of the receptacle. By this reason a receptacle of this character, is readilv assembled and is easily operated to open any lid desired.

Although two lids are illustrated, it is apparent that only one may be employed.

What is claimed, is

1. The combination with a metal receptacle having a hinged cover, of means for operating; the cover, including a rod having its upper end connected to the lid, a foot treadle formed by bending the extreme lower end of the rod, the rear portion of the treadle and the adjacent portion of the rod being; in spaced relation to provide a sliding support and guide for the rod, and support connected to the receptacle for detachably receiving the bent lower end of the rod so that the rod may be vertically slid to open and close the cover, said rod being; capable of a lateral swinging movement to connect and disconnect the support engaging; guide from the support.

2. A metal receptacle, including a cylindrical body, a plurality of legs supporting the body, each leg being formed of a metallic strip and bent to have a vertical terminal for connection to the outer face of the receptacle, a diametrically disposed plate spanning the top of the body, a lid hingedly connected to said plate, a crank carried by the lid a rod having its upper end connected to the crank, a foot treadle formed by bending the extreme lower end of the rod, the rear portion of the treadle and adjacent portion of the rod being in spaced relation and providing a slidable support and guide for the rod, said bent end of the rod fitting detachably upon the vertical terminal of the leg that is disposed directly below the crank.

A metal receptacle, including a cylindrical body, a plurality of legs supporting; the body, each leg being formed of a metallic strip and bent to have a vertical terminal for connection to the outer face of the receptacle, a diametrically disposed plate spanning the top of the body, a lid hingedly connected to said plate, a crank carried by the lid, a rod having its upper end c0nnected to the crank, a foot treadle formed by bending the extreme lower end of the rod, the rear portion of the treadle and adjacent portion of the rod being in spaced relation and providing a slidable support and guide for the rod, said bent end of the rod fitting detachably upon the vertical ter minal of the leg that is directly below the crank, said rod being capable of a lateral swinging movement to connect and disconnect the leg engaging guide from the leg of the receptacle.

A metal receptacle, including a cylindrical body, a plurality of legs supporting the body, each leg; being formed of a metallic strip and bent to have a vertical terminal for connection to the outer face of the receptacle, a diametrically disposed plate spanning the top of the body, a lid hingedly connected to said plate, a crank carried by the lid, a rod having its upper end swingingly connected to the crank, the lower end of the rod being bent to form a horizontal loop and a resilient hook for slidably and detachably engaging the vertical terminal of the leg directly below the crank, the engagement thereof normally holding the rod against swinging movement but permitting the rod to be detached from the leg when swung and also permitting a vertical sliding of the rod relatively to the leg.
