To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn CHARLES TREMOULET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Furnace-Hood, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention comprises a furnace hood adapted for use in the ordinary charcoal burning furnace and the object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified structure, at a low cost, which will be eflicient in its use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a small. furnace fitted with my improved hood; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan View showing the swinging plate moved to one side; Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the furnace on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The furnace to which I have shown my device attached is made up of the usual side wall 1 which is preferably circular in outline, having the opening 2 in one side thereof and the sliding door 3 carried in guides 4 and 5; the interior of the furnace is provided with the usual shelf 6 having a plurality of apertures 7, the charcoal resting on this shelf.
My hood comprises a main body member 8, preferably of sheet metal of frusto-conical formation, the lower end portions of the hood being bent at 9 whereby the inwardly turned portions 10 result, these inwardly bent portions being suitably engaged with a secondary frame member 11 having out-turned ends 12 adapted to rest on the top of the furnace and hold the hood in proper position.
The side walls of the main body member and the converging portions of each of'the flat parts of the hood are outwardly turned, as at 15, in order to form the rests 16 for the swinging plate 18 which is pivotally attached at 19 to one of the rests.
The outwardly turned portions 12 of the secondary member 11 not only serve as a support for the hood by engaging the upper portions of the furnace but also afford a convenient support for one end portion of a fiat-iron 20 which may be conveniently placed on the hood between the . portions 13 and 14 thereof.
By bending outwardly the upper end portion 16, of the hood, adjacent the opening, a very firm and stable support is afforded for the swinging plate 18 which serves as a rest for any vessel 21 which it may be desired to heat while using the flat-irons. This swinging plate is pivotally supported at 19 and may be swung to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby affording access to the interior of the furnace when it is desired to poke the charcoal in order to remove the ashes therefrom, as well as serving as a convenient means for regulating a draft of the furnace.
The different parts of my device may be conveniently stamped up from sheet metal, each of the three parts being made from a single sheet thereof and bent to shape,
whereby it follows that furnace hoods embodying my invention may be placed on the market at a low cost of production.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A furnace hood comprising a main body portion, a secondary body portion, the main body portion having an inwardly turned lower end in engagement with the secondary body portion, the said secondary body portion adapted to engage the upper end of the interior wall of a furnace; the upper end of the said secondary member being outwardly turned whereby a support for engagement with the furnace is formed, the said outwardly turned port-ion also serving as a support for flat-irons, the upper end of the said main body member being provided with an opening, the portions of the body member adjacent the opening being bent outwardly whereby a plurality of In testimony whereof I have signed my supports are formed and a swinging plate name to this specification in the presence of pivotally attached to one of the supports two subscribing Witnesses.
