SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,897, dated October 5, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGH MoOoNNELL, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ovens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.

My invention relates to ovens or heatingchambers for use in connection with oil, vapor, or gas stoves; and it consists in an improved bottom constructed of cast-iron, and of sulficient thickness to prevent its warping; also, in an improved device for attaching the bottom to the sides of the oven; also, in attaching the bottom to the sides of the oven; also, in attaching the heat-spreader to the lower grate of the oven; also, in construction of the heat-spreader 5 also,in construction of the grate and in supports for holding the grate in any desired position, and in construction and com bination of parts more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing is shown an isometric view of an oven constructed according to my invention, with portions removed to show the construction and arrangement of the various parts.

In said drawing A represents the top, B the sides, and G the bottom, of an oven constructed according to my invention. The bottom 0, I make of cast-iron.

I-Ieretofore it has been customary in con structing ovens of this character to make them entirely of sheet metal. It has been found from experience that bottoms so constructed are liable to warp from the effects of heat. This would cause a jar to the whole of the oven, and any article that might be in the oven in process of baking, and especially if of afiuid character, would be spilled. The object of this portion of my invention is to pro duce a bottom of sufficient strength to hold the oven rigidly in place.

At or near the outer edge of my improved bottom are formed two ribs or vertical flanges, c 0, between which the sides of the oven are received.

My improved method of attaching this cast bottom to the balance of the oven consists in the uprights I. These uprights are riveted, as shown in the drawing, to the sides of the oven, and pass through holes prepared to receive them in the bottom, when they are attached thereto in any suitable manner.

In the drawingis shown oneform of attachment, which consists in forming a flange upon the support, which bears against the bottom. This upright may be attached to the bottom in anysuitablemanner, as by means of a thread upon its end and a nut, or a hole punched below the bottom and a key placed therein.

I do not limit myself in any degree to the manner of attaching this upright to the bottom. These upright-s Fare also provided with flanges F, which act as supports of the grate or shelves of the oven.

Heretofore it has been customary to connect the heat-spreaders of ovens of this character to the bottom by some slight support. In practice it has been found that spreaders so attached to the bottom are exceedingly liable to become disarranged from putting in or taking out articles from the oven. My improve ment consists in attaching this heat-spreader to the lower grate. In this position it is entirely out of the way, is always necessarily in exactly the right position-namel y, directly over the opening in the bottom. This lower shelf, to which the heat-spreader is attached, is also provided with four fingers or arms, D, adapted to rest upon the supports F of the upright F.

The arrangement of the fingers D, in combination with the supports F, permit of the ready adjustment of the shelf D without removing any article that may be resting upon it, or changing it from a horizontal position. This is done by either sliding the shelf back so that the fingers D will be disengaged from the supports F, or sliding it forward a sufficient distance to accomplish the same purpose, when it can be raised or lowered to any other supports, F, when the fingers D can again be placed upon the supports.

The spreader E may be attached to the shelf D in any suitable manner.

In the drawing I have shown one manner of attachment by making a recess in the grate and attaching it by means of a screw-bolt and nut.

If desired, all the shelves of an oven of this character may be provided with the fingers D which would permit of their vertical adjustment.

What 1 claim is 1. In a portable oven provided with a bottom having an opening therein, aflame-spreader, and grates (one or more) supported within the oven, thereby adapting the oven for use with vapor, oil, or gas stoves, the combination, with sheet-metal sides, of a cast-iron bottom secured to the lower edges of said sheet-metal sides, substantially as set forth.

2. In a portable oven provided with a bottom having an opening therein, aflame-spreader, and grates (one or more) supported within the oven, thereby adapting the oven for use with vapor, oil, or gas stoves, the combination, with a castiron bottom provided with flanges c c, of sheet-metal sides, the lower edges of which are inserted and secured between said flanges, substantially as set forth.

3. In an oven adapted for use with vapor, oil, or gas stoves, the combination, with the cast-iron bottom 0 and sheet-metal sides, of the supports F, connected with the upper portion of the oven and inserted through and secured to the under side of the cast-iron bottom, substantially as set forth.

4. In an oven adapted for use with vapor, oil, or gas stoves, the combination, with the cast-iron bottom 0 and sheet-metal sides, of the supports F, connected with the upper portion of the oven and extending through the cast-iron bottom, said supports having flanges formed on their lower ends which engage with the under side of the cast-iron bottom, substantially as set forth.

5. In an oven adapted for use with vapor, oil, or gas stoves, the combination, with supports attached to the opposite sides of the tached thereto, substantially as and for the purposes shown.
