M 9. TOUSLEY. PORTABLE FUEL MAGAZINE FOR COOKING STOVES AND RANGES.
Eatented Oct. 9, 1888.

Ihvrrnn rn'rns ATEN'I MIRON GRAHAM TOUSLEY, OF ENGLEWOOD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ARMENA PATRICK, OF SAME PLACE.
PORTABLE FUEL-MAGAZINE FOR COOKING STOVES OR RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,997, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed November-19, I867. Serial No.255fi16. (NomodoL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIRoN GRAHAM ToUs- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fuel-Magazines for Cooking Stoves or Ranges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved magazine, showing the slide in an elevated position and having the cut-off removed; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of the magazine with the cut-off in position to hold the fuel therein; and Fig. 3,a detail view, in perspective, of the cut-off with one of the prongs thereof in section to more clearly show its form and construction.
The present invention has relation to that class of portable coal and coke magazines adapted to set into and over the hole or opening in the top of a cooking stove or range, and is more especially designed as animprovement upon my former patent of December 16, 1884, No. 309,263, and the object thereof is to improve the magazine and its cut-off in its several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,A represents the body of the magazine, provided atits lower end with an extension, 13, to fit in the hole or opening on top of the stove or range and sup port the body thereon.
The magazine is preferably constructed of cast metal and of cylindrical form; but I do not desire to confine myself to the shape or material from which it is constructed.
The magazine is provided with a suitable bail, O, or handles may be used upon the sides of the body, as found desirable, and the top of the body is so constructed as to receive an ordinary stove-lid for a cover, D.
So far as I have described the magazine it does not differ in construction from that shown and described in my former patent, and the improvements thereon which constitute the present invention will now be described.
The body A of the magazine, at or near its base or lower end, is formed with a series of suitably shaped openings, a, the number thereof corresponding with the number of prongs E of the cut-off shown in Fig. 3, the prongs entering these openings to form asupport and cutoff for the fuel in the magazine when not in use or when it is desired to remove the magazine with its contents from the stove or range. When the cut-off is withdrawn, the fuel in the magazine will feed itself to the stove or range, the coal sliding down from the magazine as fast as it consumes away beneath.
It should be understood that the cut-off is removed when the magazine is on-the stove or range, and is replaced in position before re moving it.
Immediately below the openings a the body A is provided or formed with asupporting-flange, 1), upon which rests a gravitating slide or cap, F, which closes the openings when the cut-off is removed, said slide or cap having a suitable knob or handle, 0, the shank thereof passing through said slide or cap and through a vertical slot, (1, in the body A. The inner end of the shank e is screw-threaded to receive a nut, f, for connecting the slide or cap to the body of the magazine and admitting of its ready removal when required.
Any suitable means may be employed for connecting the slide or cap to the body of the magazine, so long as it will admit of its vertical movement to close or expose the openings a.
\Vhen the cut ofi is removed, the slide or cap will fall by its own weight or gravity to close the openings, said slide or cap being supportedbytheflangehereinbeforedescribed. The cutoff slides horizontally into position, and in the same manner it is withdrawn from the magazine. The prongs E preferably decrease in thickness in a direction toward their points or outer ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereby enabling them to more readily and easily penetrate the coal when the cut-off is inserted in place. The prongs are also preferably beveled inwardly upon their inner sides, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, so as to widen the space between the prongs in a direction toward their under sides, and thus prevent choking or clogging of the spaces between the prongs. The cut-off is provided with a suit-able handle, F, and between it and the prongs isa head, G, which is curved to correspond with the curvature of the body A of the magazine. This head is disposed at an oblique angle to the plane of the prongs which join the head atits lower inside edge, while the handle joins the head at the top of its outside edge and at its center. By means of the head G the cut off is greatly strengthened where most needed, and its obliquity gives proper elevation to the handle and prevents interference with the free working of the gravitating slide or cap.
The extension 13 of the body A is of less diameter than said body, as in my former patent, thus leaving upon the interior of the body a rim, 9, which forms a support for the cut-off when in position in the magazine. It is preferred to form the extension 13 of considerably less width than that shown in my former patcut, so as not to enter or extend down into the hole or opening on the stove or range to such a distance, thereby more effectually preventing gas from generating in the magazine and escaping therefrom. The gradual feeding of the fuel in the magazine to the stove or range consumes all gas, sulphur, and carbon and gives greater heat for the amount of fuel consumed than is ordinarily obtained.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A portable fuel'magazine for cooking stoves or ranges, having an opening or openings for the reception of a cutoff, and a gravitating slide or cap to cover said openings or expose them for introducing the cut-01f in the magazine, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A portable fuel-magazine for cooking stoves or ranges, having a series of openings at or near its base, a gravitating slide or cap for covering or exposing said openings, and a flange for supporting the slide or cap when in its closed position, in combination with a cutolf having a series of prongs to correspond with the number of openings, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with a portable fuelmagazine for cooking stoves or ranges, of a cut-ofl consisting of a series of prongs and an obliquely-formed head provided with ahaudle, said prongs and handle being on different horizontal planes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A portable fuel-magazine having an extension to fit in the hole or opening of the cooking-stove and an interior rim, and provided with a gravitating slide or cap to cover or expose a series of openings, in combination with a cut-off having a series of prongs and oblique head, and a handle joining said head, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
