Description

J. H. LYON.
Portable Furnace.
No. 101,893. Patented April 12, 1870.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HAMMOND LYON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE FURNACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 101,893, dated April 12, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HAMMOND LYON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flat- Iron Heater or Summer Furnace; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a flat-iron heater or summer furnace, which can be used either in a stove or without it, as may be desired.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my furnace. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bed of the furnace when not used in a stove.
A represents a fire-grate in the shape of a basket, having holes a a in the bottom, elongated slots b bin its sides along the lower edge, and holes e 6 near the upper rim. Below the holes e e, on the outside of the basket A, are lugs or projections d 01, so that when the grate or furnace is inserted in the hole of a stove or range said lugs will come on the stove, preventing the grate from going too far down, so as to stop up the draft-holes e 0.
Two of these grates or furnaces being inserted in the holes of a stove or range, a plate, B, is laid or attached to their top for the purpose of heating flat-irons. This plate may or may not be provided with lids 0, so that cooking may be done on the same.
When it is desired to use the furnace without the stove, either in the room or outdoors, I provide a raised platform or bed, D, with openings, over which the grates are placed to assist the upward draft.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the two grates A A, cover B, and stand D, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3d day of March, 1870.
JAMES HAMMOND LYON.
