Description

G. H. PHILLIPS.
Cooking Stoye. N0. 83,790. Patented Nov. 3, 1868.

UNITED STATES PATEN ()rrron.
GEORGE H. PHILLIPS, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
fipecifieatien forming part of Letters Patent No. 83,790, dated November 3, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Prnnmrs, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification,in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cookingstove with my improvements therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the back end of said stove with the water-reserv ir removed therefrom.
The same letters refer to like parts in each of said figures.
My said invention consists in constructing the back plate of a cooking-stove with a hollow shelf or ridge projecting horizontally backward, and in curving or raising upward and backward the rear end part of the top plate, over and above the vertical flues at the back and above the top edge of the rear end plate of said stove, and thereby extending upward above the horizontal plane of said top, and above the exit-aperture or pipecollar thereof, said rear vertical fines, in such a manner as to form by such extension hot-air or heating chambers thereat, which are used in combination with a water reservoir or tank arranged thereat and connected therewith for warming and heating water, all in manner substantially as hereinafter fully described and shown.
The construction of my said improvements in cooking-stoves is as follows: The rear plate of said stove is made in form so that its upper part, 0, is plain or straight, and at about its central part it projects horizontally back or to rearward of the upper part 0 sufliciently to form a shelf or ridge part, F, and then turning and continuing downward to the bot tom of said plate, and in a curved or box-like form from side edge to side edge, so as to form a recess below said shelf part F, all substantially in manner as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the annexed drawings, and so as to be cast together in one piece and form a solid plate thereof.
The top plate A of said stove, at its rear part, is curved or raised up above its boilerhole or horizontal plane, and backward and up from the exit-passage or pipe-collar J, and over and above the vertical flues at the rear end of said stove, and above the top edge of end plate 0, which top edge is on a horizontal line with the boiler-hole plane of said top plate, the jambs or side plates D of said stove being carried up at their back upper ends, so as to cover the side ends of said raised part of the top plate A, and thus form at the rear part of said top plate, by thus extending the rear end vertical lines upward in manner as shown, the hotair or heating chambers H H H, open at their rear sides, and above the horizontal plane of said top plate A, all substantially in manner as shown in the annexed drawings.
Awater reservoir or tank, E is now arranged in combination until the said improved stove by placing the water-reservoii"s bottom part on and over the aforesaid shelf or ridge F,
and its front side next adjoining the plane part 0 of the back end plate, while the upper part of its front side covers and forms the rear side of the heating-chambers H H H aforesaid. The water-reservoir is now secured in its thus-arranged position by bolts securing its front top or upper part to the stove-top, or in any other suitable way, so that it is thereby secured in permanent combination with said improved back end-plate and topplate heating-chambers, the same as and of a cooking-stove, substantially in manner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the annexed drawing,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Extending the rear end vertical lines of a cooking-stove upward above the horizontal plane of the boiler-hole top plate A and the top edge of the rear end plate 0 thereof, which is in the same horizontal plane, by curving or raising upward and backward above its horizontal plane the rear end part of the said top plate, thereby extending said flues upward, so as to form at and above their upper ends, and above the horizontal plane of the stove A, hotair or heating chambers H H H, open at their rear side, in manner substantially as herein shelf F and boiler E; substantially as and for shown and deseribed, for the purpose set forth. the purposes described. 2. The combination of the upward extension of the rear flues of a cooking-stove over the PHILLIPS horizontal plane of the top plate, and the ele- Witnesses: vation of the rear part of the top plates, Where- J. J. SAVAGE,
by hot-air chambers H are formed,with the I. L. BARNEY.
