Letters Patent No. 95,623, dated October 5, 1869; antedated September 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILERS FOR COOKING-STOVES;
The Schedule referred to in these Lettens Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. ROBBINS, of the city and county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved Reservoir-Back for Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyu'ng drawings, making a part of this specification, in which 4 Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure 2 is a top view, a portion of the device in each drawing being shown in section.
The object bf this invention is to provide an attachment for cooking-stoves, which will enable the cook always to have a supply of hot water on hand, the quantity and. boiling-temperature of which can be seen at a glance without removing the cover of the boiler. At the same time the construction and arrangementof the apparatus are such as to protect the back of the fire-pot from burning away, thereby rendering the stove more durable and less expensive in the matter of repairs than those heretofore introduced intogeneral use.
In the'drawings- A is the boiler.
B is a hollow water-back, forming the entire rear wall of the fire-chamben'and, if necessary, they end walls also.
G is a pipe, leading from one cornerof the waterback along .the side wall of the stove, under the top to the rear wall, thence passing out under the boiler A, and up into the latter, nearly to its upper edge, where it terminates in a bent' spout, c.
D is a pipe on the otherside of the stove, and extending from the opposite end of the water-back, in a similar manner into the boiler, but only an inch or two above the bottom of the latter, terminating with- E is a vertical glass-pipe, bent inward at its endse e, which connect with the upper and lower edges respectively of the boiler, so that water contained within the latter freely passes into the pipe.
F is a cock, by which the boiler can be emptied, or water in any quantity may be drawn from it, without removing the cover G.
It will be observed-that the difference between the heights of the two pipes O D, in the boiler, will cause a rapid circulation ofwater through said pipes, the boiler, and the water-back, so as to constantly renew the water in the latter, and thereby keep the rear wall of the fire-chamber as cool as possible, an arrangement which not only saves an important part of the stove from rapidly burning out, but at the same time greatly increases the heating-capacity of the boiler, enabling it to keep the water at a higher and more even temperature, and, when just filled, to heat the water very quickly.
The glass tube shows the cook or attendant, at all times, the'exact height of the water in the boiler, and
also indicates whether said water has reached the boiling-point, thus enabling her to ascertain those important facts without the necessity ofleaving her work in'another part of the room, to approach the stove,
lift the boiler-cover,and inspect the condition of the. water within.
Having thus described my invention,
I What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In connection with an oblong boiler, A, constructed and adapted to occupy the rear end of the stove, as described, the pipes G D, the cock F, the water-back B, and the glass pipe E, when said parts are each constructed and employed in the manner set forth, the whole forming a single boiling-apparatus for cook ing-stoves,,substantially as described.
