Description
J. A. TALPEY. Attachment for Cooking Stoves.
No. 53,503. Patented March 27. 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT DFFICE.
JOSEPH A. TALPEY, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATTACHM ENT FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,503, dated March 27, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. TALPEY, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Attachm entfor Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which'will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing its application. Fig.2 is a longitudinal vertical central section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention consists in the construction of an apparatus to be applied to a stove in the place usually occupied by the knee-joint or elbow, between the stove and the chimney, whereby light cooking, such as broiling steak, boilin g tea-kettle, 850., may be done without building a fire in the stove, which promotes comfort and economy, as will be presently explained.
To enable others to understand my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body or outside walls of the apparatus. They may be made of anysuitable material and put together in any proper way to give the apparatus an appropriate appearance. Through the bottom wall, and near the front of the apparatus, a hole is made and a piece of pipe, at, attached in the usual or any suitable manner, which is intended to tit over the flanges around the hole provided for the pipe in the top rear part of a stove; and another piece of pipe, I), is secured to the rear end of the body A, which protrudes into the flue or chimney in the usual manner.
B is a pan or drawer, which is fitted to slide on suitable guides on the inner side walls of the apparatus, so as to be capable of being drawn out or pushed into the body A. This serves the purpose of a fire box. At its front part it is provided with suitable draft-openings c c. This lire-box B is so situated as not to obstruct the passage of the products of combustion from the stove to the chimney. The same pass through my apparatus under the fire-box B, which is situated up high enough to prevent this, and their exitis as unobstructed as if an ordinary elbow-pipe were employed.
The top of the apparatus is provided with suitable holes and lids to admit of cookingutensils being placed therein in the ordinary way. In Fig. l a tea-kettle is shown as placed on the apparatus for the purpose of boiling water.
This apparatus will be found a most convenient attachment to a stove for use in summer, when it is only necessary ofttimes, in order to prepare a meal, to boil a tea-kettle and broil or fry a piece of meat, and this can be done very easily and quickly with my apparatus and in winter-time, when it is desirable to obtain as much heat as possible from a stove, my apparatus will be found to be an excellent radiator of heat.
I do not limit myself to any precise form of apparatus, nor to the particular construction or arrangement of parts herein shown and described, as I intend,in some instances, to place the tire-box lower down in the apparatus and leave an air-passage on its sides for carrying off the heat, 850.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cooking-stove attachment herein described, arranged in the place of the pipeelbow, as and for the purpose set forth,
JOSEPH A. TALPEY.
Witnesses FRANCIS RUssnLL, FREDERICK P. HAM.
