Description
2 Sheets--Sheet L J. MAGEEI l Cooking-Range.
No. 129,410- Pawmw my 15,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEE@ JOHN MAGEE, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MAGEE FURNACE COMPANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-RANGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,416, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, JOHN MAGEE, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Portable Cookingdtanges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this speciiication, in which- I `igure l is a perspective view of a portable cooking-range having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section representing a modification ofthe same.
My invention consists in a portable cooking-range, provided with an elevated hot-closet having a cast-iron front and top, in which articles of food when cooked may be kept warm, the position of the closet being such as to occupy but little of the available space of the apartment, and being as near as compatible with the flue of the chimney.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is the portable cooking-range, the rear ot the top plate cl of which is extended out so as to project over beyond the back b of the range a distance considerably more than it does beyond the front c, in order, thereby, to allow of a hot or warming closet, B, being supported thereon in a convenient position with respect to the oven or holes in the top plate of the range, and asnear as compatible with the flue of the chimney. The top plate of the portable range is intended to be provided with lugs projecting up therefrom for securing the cast-iron standards d, sheet-iron back e, and sheet-iron ends f thereto. Extending between the standards d is a cast-iron front plate, g, to which is secured the front of a sheet iron plate, h, forming the shelf or bottom of the closet B 5 the back of this plate h being riveted or otherwise fastened to a sheet-iron plate forming the back e and endsf, which extend up fromthe top plate a, and serve, in connection with the standards d, to support the hot-closet. The cast-iron front gof the closet is provided with one or more sliding or swinging doors, l', and the top l ot' the closet is also of cast-iron,its back e, ends j', and shelf h only being of sheet-iron. The steam arising from the articles being cooked may be allowed to escape through a tube or openingcommunicating with the flue. If desired, a space or chamber may be formed at the back and ends of the hot-closet, (see Fig. 2,) whereby I am enabled to increase its heat. my is an outlet from the top plate of the range, through a pipe connected with which the smoke and unconsumed gases pass up the ilue of the chimney. When the opening ot' this ilue is situated above the hot-closet the smoke-pipe may lead up through an opening, n, in its top, said opening being provided with aV close-iittin g cap made removable for this purpose.
Claim.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable cooking-range, provided with an elevated hot-closet having a cast-iron top and front, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 27th day of March, 1872.
JOHN MAGEE.
In presence of- N. W. STEARNs, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
