To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLAY W. EvA'rTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of 'Richland and State'of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a means to facilitate heating and cooking at a grate and particularly at an open fireplace grate.

. I aim to provide a supporting or hot plate for the vessels or receptacles containing the matter being heated or cooked which is detachably supported from bars of the grate; having supporting means adjustable to facilitate attachment of the hot plate to grates of differentconstructions and sizes; having extensible attaching means to engage the grate bars; having attaching means including a rest portion and a fastening lug and having an effective smoke guard associated therewith.

Other objects, will appear hereinafter,

as a description follows to be taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating one preferred embodiment, and wherein 4 Figure l is a front elevation of an open fireplace having my improvement associated therewith;

Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, an open fireplace is conventionally shown in the drawings at 7 being provided by the masonry 8. The masonry may support horizontal grate bars 9 and also horizontal grate bars 10 arranged in a vertical plane, in separated relation as usual.

My attachment includes a supporting or hot plate 11 which may have integral therewith, a downwardly extending flange 12 at .15 which may be engaged by a suitable lifter for the purposes of handling them. i A special form of lifter 16 is shown in Fig. 6

which may be used to grip the hot plate since it has two hook ends 17 adaptedto cooperate with openings 18 of the hot plate.

Suitable brackets may be employed to support the hot plate from the grate bars and to this end the brackets have sections 19 and 20. The section 19 may be fastened to the hot plate by means of set screws or the equivalent at 21 and have a vertical portion in which a bolt 22 is mounted and 011 which rides a thumb nut 23. The section 20 also has a vertical portion and therein an elongated opening 24: I is provided through which the bolt 22 passes and beyond which the nut 23 is disposed. At the base of the vertical portion of section 20 a rest lug 25 integral therewith is provided and extending from the rest lug out of alinement with the vertical portion of section 20 described, is a fastening lug 26 which passes through an opening intermediate the adjacent grate bars 9. i

It will be noted that I have suitably spaced the hot plate from the rear and side walls of the fireplace so as to provide a space for the ascension of smoke and heat. However under some conditions, the smoke would issue excessively from the front of the fireplace and therefore a smoke guard being in the form of a large plate or shield is provided at 27. In some instances, it is not desirable to use the guard 27 and hence the same is removably fastened to the hot plate so that the hot plate may be alone supported from the grate as illustrated in Fig. 3. To accomplish the removable mounting of the guard, the same is provided with a plurality of arcuate openings 28 permitting the guard to be hung from pins or lugs 29 extendin outwardly from the flange 12. To facihtate handling of the guard, a handle has been provided thereon as at 30.

In fastening the hot plate to the grate, the sections 19 and 20 are first relatively Q g s 1,266,783

adjusted and fastened in adjusted position by means of the bolt 22 and its nut 23. Then the lug 26 is passed through the opening intermediate two of the grate bars and the hot plate so adjusted that the lug 26 extends through the opening intermediate the first two grate bars 9. At the same time, the rest lug securely seats on top of the lowermost bar 1 0 and theflanges 13 rest on the uppermost bar 10. The lug 26 may be dispensed with but since the hot plate is supported by the uppermost bar 10 oil? center, it is advisable to employ it to prevent movement of the hot plate laterally of, the bars 10. Sections 19 and 20, of course, can be relatively adjusted and fas tened to accommodate attachment of the hot plate to grates of different sizes and constructions. Prior to attaching the hot plate or thereafter, as desired, the guard 27 when'advisable, is connected to the hot plate by so manipulating it that the arcuate openings 28 receive the pins 29. The draft of the fire will not be hampered since the device does not unduly close the open fireplace. The vessels or utensils containing the material to be heated or cooked are placed on the hot plate with the lids 14 thereon 'orfone or more of them removed as is desirable. I

2. ln combination with a grate having a series of grate bars arranged in a horizontal plane and a series of grate bars ar ranged in a vertical plane both series extending in the same direction, a plate resting upon the top bar of the grate, vertically extending members secured by their upper ends to said plate and arranged upon the outside of said grate bars which are arranged in a vertical plane, the lower ends of said members being bent horizontally inwardly and then vertically downward, the said horizontal portions of said members adapted to rest upon one of said last named grate bars and said vertical portions of said membersadapte'd to pass between a pair of the horizontal bars arranged in a horizontal'plane.
