CHARLES 'I. JOHNSON, F MOSSVILLE, LOUISIANA.
STOVE-TOP PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 191%.
Application filed March 27, 1916. Serial No. 87,003.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. JorINsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mossville, in the parish of Calcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Top Protectors, of which the following is a speci- Iication.
The present invention relates to stoves and furnaces and more particularly to new and useful improvements in sanitary stove top protectors.
An object of my invention is to provide a stove top protector adapted for detachable securement on a stove arranged to receive the cooking utensils to prevent flies and other insects from falling thereinto.
Another object of my invention is to provide a protector having improved closures therefor arranged whereby to facilitate access to the cooking utensils when the device is in position on a stove, said closures being adapted for conversion into supports when desired.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a protector of the class described having means associated therewith for detachably mounting the same in position on a stove.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my invention will be apparent from the following detail descrip tion and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove top protector embodying the improvements of my invention,
Fig.2 is a front elevational view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a frag-mental reduced end view of one of the side frames of the device.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates in its entirety a stove, which in the present instance is of the range type having the usual top 2. My invention embodies a screened frame work indicated 3 in its entirety having a top 4, ends 5 and a rear wall. The top, ends, and rear wall are preferably provided with a screening 6, the preferred construction of one of these screened walls being shown to advantage in Fig. 8. Re erring to Fig. 3 the main supporting frame of one of the end walls 5 is shown and designated 7, the screen is designated 6 as her inbefore and is retained in position by a supplemental frame member 8 which grips the screen against the frame 7. similar suitable fastening means 9 serve to prevent dislodgment of the retaining frame 8. The bottom of the device is preferably open, the ends being maintained by means of a bottom frame 10. In order to support the protector on the stove lid 2 I provide curved arms 11 extending from the bottom frame 10, said curved arms having screws 12 therein for engagement with the downturned edges of porting frames of the protector may be formed of wood if desired but it is preferred that the same be formed of light metal. However, it will be noted as indicated at 13 that the curved arms 11 extend beneath the protector whereby to support the bottom frame of the protector in spaced relation to the stove top, preventing actual contact and hence obviating the danger of fire. The front of the protector is closed by a pair of closure members designated in their entirety 14. The closure members 14 comprise upper and lower sections 15 and 16 respectively, the upper sections being hinged at their outer ends to the ends 5 as indicated at 17. The upper and lower sections are provided with screening 15 similar to the screening provided in the top and ends of the body of the protector. The bottom sections 16 are hinged as at 19 to the upper sections 15 in order to permit individual opening of the bottom sections. Suitable knobs or handles 19 may be carried by the 11 per sections 15 for an obvious purpose.
andles 20 are carried by the lower marginal edges of the lower section 16 for raising the same, and spring latches 21 serve to retain the upper sections in closed position. As best shown in Fig. 1 the lower section may be seen in a horizontal position as indicated in dotted lines at 22, a pair of chains or other suitable flexible elements 23 serving to supportthe sections 16 in the position shown, thereby providing a shelf. As also shown to advantage in Fig. 1 the upper and lower sections may be swung outwardly as indicated in dotted lines at 24 so as to per mit access to the entire inner space of the protector.
In use, the articles to be cooked are placed on the stove in the usual manner, the protector having been placed in position previ- Bolts or the stove top 2. The sup- 1 ously. It will be seen that the draft of the stove is not interfered with in any way by my improved. protector and that while the food being cooked is clear to the view at all times, the danger of insects falling into the food is obviated.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that if may make such changes on said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
ll hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. in a stove protector, a body comprising a screened top, rear and side portions, front closure portions formed in double sections hinged to each other and to the end sections of the body, and latching means for said closures.
E2. in a protector of the class described, a body comprising top, side and end portions provided with screens, closures for the front of said body comprising sections hinged together and to the end portions of said body, latching means therefor, and means for retaining said body on a stove.
3. In a stove top protector, a body having a screened top, rear, side and end walls,
closure frames hingedly connected, the uppermost of the frames being hinged to the end walls of said body, and the lower frames being adapted for movement into horizontal position to form shelves.
4. The combination with a cookingstove Copies oi this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Eatents, Washington, 10. G.
