STOVE-DOOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362.325. dated May 3, 1887.

Be it known that I, JAMEs G. SMITH, a citizen of the United States,and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain` new and useful Improvements in Stove-Doors; and I do `de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and

to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specication.

Figure l ofthe drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail, and shows top View of the door.

The invention relates to improvements in stove-doors, for heating or cooking purposes, of any construction, and is especiallyadapted for use on cookingstove's, the object being to provide a door which, when hinged to the stove, can be turned dow-n into a horizontal position to form a hearth for the oven. The door is so constructed and arranged that it can be quickly and readily attached in proper position, and will not obstruct the entrance or opening of the oven when turned down to form a hearth.

The invention consists in certain details of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described,illustrated in the accompanying drawings, .and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the portion of a stove, a designating the oven thereof, having the entrance or opening a.

B is the stove-door, made of a number of transverse leaves hinged or jointed together at their meeting edges. The door is prefera-v bly made of two leaves, b b', as shown in the drawings, so connected byr hinges or otherwise that they will readily fold upon each other. The lower leaf, b, is hinged upon the lower edge of the opening a of the oven,or has journals bi at the corners of its lower edge, which turn in hearings b5, east upon the front of the stove in proper positions.

C is a supporting ledge or flange standing outward from the lower edge of the opening a', so as to sustain the Weight of the door when turned outward horizontally and prevent the hinges or bearings of the leafb from breaking.

The upper leaf, b, is provided with a suitable handle, d, near'its upper edge, and has standing from its upper corners the pins or projections D D, each of which rests in the space between the side of the stove and a vertical guide-bar, E, secured thereto. Il'hen the door is raised,the leaf b rests vertically above the leaf b and the entrance to the oven is effectually closed, the projections D and the guidebars preventing the door from falling outward. 'When it is desired to convert the door into a hearth, the leaf b is pulled downward by means of its handle d, and is folded upon the leaf b, which is by the same action turned outwardvhorizontallyo as to rest upon the supporting-flange C. As the leaf b descends, the projections D and guide-bars E keep its upper edge to the side of the stove.

Some ofthe advantages of the invention are Yas follows: The door isl of simple construction and easily placed in position. It makes awide yhearth on the level of the bottom of the oven, on which pans containing food can be rested if the baking is too rapid, and it in no way obstructs the entrance to the oven.

I am aware that turn down or pivoted hearths .have been used in connection with stoves, and such I do not claim, broadly, as my invention is essentially a door and. turndown hearth in one.

I do not desireto limit myself to the particular form of guides for the upper leaf of the door, as shown and described, nor to the par ticular form of joint uniting the leaves; nor do I desire to limit myself to the userof two leaves only, as it is evident the door might have more leaves and loe effectivei For greater security in keeping the door in place when closed, it uis provided on the in side with a sliding bolt, made to move up and down, fastening thev two leaves together securely in place by lowering said holt so as to cover a portion of both the upper and lower leaves. In the present instance I have shown the upper'hinged section of the door as provided with a vertical slot for the passage ICO of aiinger-piece on the upper outer side of the sliding bolt. By reference to Fig. l it will be seen by dotted lines that a support in addition to the ledge or strip may be employed, and this support may consist of two pivoted horizontal arms adapted to move outwardly for supporting the door. v

The combination, in a stove, of thc door composed of two or more leaves jointed together at their meeting edges, the lower leaf being hinged or otherwise jointed tothe stove and the highest leaf being provided with projections standing outward from its upper corners, and the guide-bars secured to the stove and so placed as to direct the projections on the highest leaf of the door, substantially as speeied.

2. The combination,with the stove provided with the oven a, and the guide-bars secured to the stove on each side of the entrance a of the oven, of the door composed of two transverse leaves jointed together at their meeting edges, the lower leaf hinged or otherwise jointed to the lower edge of the opening or entrance a, and the upper leaf provided with projections at its upper corners to engage and be directed by the said guide-bars, substantially as specified.

8. The combination ofthe stove A,provided with the oven a, the edge or ilange @standing outward from the lower edge of the entrance or mouth of said oven, the door B, composed of the leaves b b', the former jointed at its lower edge to the lower edge of the opening a', and the latter provided with the pins or projections D D, and the guide-bars E E, substarr tially as specified.
