FOLDING STOVE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,082, dated February 25, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. ENFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phillipsburg, in the county of Granite and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Stoves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to portable foldin g stoves designed especially for use in camping out, and among the objects in view is to provide an extremely simple, light, durable, and efficient portable stove adapted to be readily set up on the ground for various cooking purposes and to be folded into a very small and compact space when not in use; and with the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my improved stove set up for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is an under side view showing the device in its closed or folded position. Fig. i is a detail view of the detachable stovepipe. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the manner of securing the stovepipe in position. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the supporting-base for the stove.

My improved stove is preferablyconstructed of sheet-iron and comprises a number of sections hinged together in such manner as to adapt the same to be readily set up in position on or in the ground for cooking purposes and to be folded compactly together when not in use, and my stove (indicated at A) coinprises the top section, B, to which is hinged the side sections, O, and end sections, D D.

The top section, B, is provided with a number of holes E to permit of cooking utensils being inserted and held therein to receive the heat from the fire, which in practice is built upon the ground beneath the top section. Said top section is also provided with a smokehole G to allow of the smoke being carried off through the smoke-pipe, presently described.

The side sections, C, and end sections, D, are adapted to be let down into a vertical position, as seen, and to rest firmly on or in the ground, and when in such position make closefitting joints, so as to retain as much heat as possible within the stove. The end section, D, is preferably provided with side pieces or sections H hinged to said section and being of triangular form, so that when the said end section is let down into the position seen in Figs. 1 and 2 said sections H bear upon the ground at their lower apices, whereby said end section, D, will be firmly supported in the inclined position shown. Said end section and its side pieces are designed to serve as an oven for baking bread, broiling, &c., said section D being for this purpose provided with a hook I from which pans, &c., may be hung. If the said sections are not to serve as an oven the sections Il may be folded against the sect-ion D, so as to be out of the way.

I prefer to make the sections H of tin or of sheet-iron tinned upon their inner sides, whereby to reflect the heat against the utensil suspended from the section D.

I prefer to employ a smoke-pipe J, made in sections J suitably held together, the lowermost section being provided with any suitable means whereby said pipe may be firmly yet detachably held in position on the stove. For instance, said lowermost section of stovepipe may be provided with pins or lugs 1, arranged upon opposite sides, adapted to enter notches M in the top section, B, at the edge of the smoke-hole, a plate N, having a hole 0 aligning with hole G, being riveted or otherwise secured upon the lower side of the section B and serving to support the lugs and thus keep the smoke-pipe from dropping down within the smoke-hole.

To secure the smoke-pipe in position the lugs are passed within the notches and then the pipe is turned partly around, whereby it will be locked in place, and to remove said pipe the same is turned until the lugs can pass out of the notches, when the pipe may be withdrawn.

If desired, I may employ a supporting-base P, within and upon which the stove, when set up for use, may be placed, said base P con sisting of a rectangular piece bent at right angles, and which base may be folded or placed over the stove when the latter is folded together, thus making a very compact arrangement.

My device, as will be seen, is extremely simple and inexpensive and can be folded into an extremely small and compact space, whereby it is especially adapted for use in army service.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described folding stove, consist- I ing in the combination with the top section B, of the side sections 0 hinged to the top section B, the end sections D D, hinged tot-he top section B, and the triangular sections H hinged at their upper inclined edges to the side edges of the section D, and adapted when unfolded to bear upon the ground at their lower apices to support the section D in an inclined position, as set forth.
