PATENT OFFICE.
HOLDER FoR MJEAT-BROILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 762,401, dated. June 14, 1904.
Application filed September25,1901. serial No. 76,565. \NO model.)
To all whom, it may concern.- l
Be it known that I, IsAAo M. HALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Mas- .saehusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Meat-Broilers, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices which consist of an open-bottomed oven or chamber which is adapted to be placed over an opening in a stove and to support a meatbroiler therein.
My invention has for itsprincipal object the production of a portable oven of the character above mentioned which is adapted to permit the ready introduction and removal of an ordinary meat-broilerand in which the broiler may be moved to different elevations without removing the same.
For an understanding of my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa perspective view of my device with the parts shown in one of their positions. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sectional views on the lines m m and y y of Fig. 5, respectively, the parts being shown in Fig. 4 in the same position as in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation.
The oven 1 is preferably cubical in form and constructed of sheet metal.- Its bottom is provided with a circular opening 2, which is adapted to correspond to the size of the opening in the stove over which it is to be used. Two angle-brackets 3 and 4 are secured to the sides of the chamber and extend in front thereof, forming guid eways in whicha door 5 is adapted to slide. The lower edge of said door is bent about a rod 6, the ends of which extend through slots 7, formed in said brackets 3 and 4. A cast-metal door 8, having a weighted bottom, is pivoted to said rod 6 by hinges 9 directly below andelose to said sliding door 5. Said door 8 is provided with two notches or openings 11 in its lower edge and is arranged to swing freely in either direction between the sides of a rectangular-shaped opening 10, which is formed in the front wall 12 of the chamber. A door 13. is pivoted by pintles 14 in brackets 15, which are secured to the sides of the chamber near its front end, and links 16 are pivoted at 19 to each end of said door 13 and to the ends of rod 6 outside the brackets 3 and 4. Two shelves or brackets 17 and 18 are secured at different elevations to the inner side of the rear wall of the chamber.
Having described the construction of my device, the operation thereof and manner in which itis used are as follows: \Vhen the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the upper edge of the sliding door 5 is slightly above the lower edge of the portion of the front wall 12 which is above the opening 10, the rod 6 is supported in the lower endsof slots 7, the door 13 is in a substantially horizontal position, and the door 8 is supported so that its lower edge just clears door 13 and the lower edge of the opening 10 in the front wall 12. The oven having been placed over the opening in the stove, the end of the broiler B is pressed against the door 8, swinging the same inwardly, (see dotted lines in Fig. 4,) so that its inner end may rest on the lower shelf 18 and its handle rest on door 13, beneath and within notches 11, as indicated in Fig. 1. As the oven completely closes the stove-opening and as thereare various open joints in the face side of the oven, the draft of the stove will cause air to be drawn from the room into the oven and up the chimney, preventing the meat from being scorched by burning fat and preventing the smoke from the fire from coming in contact with the meat or from escaping into the room. V hen it is necessary to turn the broiler, it is simply drawn back out of the oven, the door 8 swinging outwardly to per mit its ready removal. Then it is turned and again inserted. If it is found that the fire is too hot for the meat when the broiler is in its lowest position, its inner end is raised until it rests on the upper shelf 17 and then the handle is raised, causing the doors 5 and 8 to slide upwardly to the position shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5. The upward movement of rod 6 causes the links 16 to draw the door 13 up to the vertical position shown in said figures, the width of the door 13 being just sufficient to close the space below the door 8 and its length being sufficient to permit its ends to engage the front wall 12 of the oven. The pivots 6 and 19 are so arranged with respect to pivot 14 when the door 13 is swung up to its vertical position, so that it rests against the front wall 12, that a straight line through the centers of pivots 6 and 19 will pass between the center of pivot 1 1 and'the wall 12. hen, therefore.the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, the weight of doors 5 and 8 will act to hold door 13 in its upright or closed position. When the parts are in this position, the broiler may be readily removed as before without throwing down the door 13; but if it is again desired to throw down this door the broiler is simply lowered, so that it strikes the top thereof as it is removed, drawing the upper edge of the door forwardly until the center lines of links 16 swing outside of pivot 14, and then the doors will all drop to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
I am aware that prior to my invention a device of this character has been produced which was provided with a swinging door that was adapted to be swung inwardly to provide a draft; but so far as 1 am aware I am the first to provide a door which is adapted to swing freely either inwardly or outwardly, so as to permit the ready insertion and removal of the broiler and which normally hangs in a vertical position, so as to shut off the draft to the oven in which the broiler is supported.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction herein described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. A device of the character described comprising an open-bottomed chamber, an opening in the front wall thereof, a sliding door which is arranged to close the upper portion of said opening when in its lowest position, a gravity-door which is pivoted to the lower end of said sliding door and is adapted to close the lower portion of said opening when said sliding door is in said lower position, and to close the upper portion thereof when said sliding door is in its highest position, said gravity-door being adapted to swing in either direction from the position in which it isheld by gravity, a swinging door which is pivoted below said doors, links which connect said swinging door to said sliding door, two shelves in said chamber which are adapted to support the inner end of a broiler at different elevations, said swinging door being adapted to be swung up by said links so as to close the lower portion of said front opening when said gravity-door is raised so as to close the upper portion thereof.
2. A device of the character described comprising a chamber having an opening in its bottom, an opening in its front wall through which a broiler may be passed, means for supporting the broiler in said chamber at different elevations, a sliding and a swinging door which are adapted to cooperate to close said front opening when the broiler is in one position, and a third door which is connected to said sliding door and is adapted to cooperate with said swinging door to close said front opening when the broiler is in a difierent position.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
