Description

(No Model.) I
J. J. GRAVES.
GOUNTERBALANGING DEVICE FOR DOORS.
No. 463,150. Patented NOY.-17,1891.
V n QL/ATTOR EY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. GRAVES, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK,.ASSIGNOR TO SHERMAN S. JEWETT & (30., OF SAME PLACE.
COUNTERBALANCING DEVICE FOR DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,150, dated November 17,1891.
Application filed November 5, 1890. Serial No. 370,382. (No model.)
though notlimited in its use thereto; and
the invention consists of the improvements in the counterbalancing.devices to be hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a warming-oven having my invention applied thereto; and Figs. 2 and 3 are crosssections thereof, showing the door in its closed and its open positions.
A represents the oven, which may be of any suitable shape and size, the front being preferably curved or rounded and open, a bead or framepiece a surrounding the opening. This opening, which is of a size nearly equal to the front of the oven, so that easy access to the entire interior thereof may be had, is closed by a single door B, which is curved to conform to the front of the oven. The door B is secured to arms'or levers C, which are by preference bifurcated, as shown, to better support the door, and these are pivoted at c to the side plates of the oven at such ,points as that when the door is swung up to open the oven, as shown in Fig. 3,it shall be within the oven, and the center of gravity thereof and of the arms C- shall be slightly in rear of the pivots 0, so that the door will be held in its elevated or open position, the handleb of the door restingagainst the u pper f rami n gwpiece a.
D is a weighted arm or lever extending rearward from its pivot or fulcrum-that is, in a direction away from the door which itserves to counterbalance. It is separate from the arms'C, though for convenience hung upon the same pivot. The door-supporting arm 0 is provided with a lug or projection E, situated to one side of it's pivot and adapted to engage with the weighted arm D and raise it as the door is being closed, which. thereby ceases to act as a counter-balance, as when in this position the door will be held open by its own weight, as has been described. This disengagement is effected by arresting the movement of the arm D, either by allowing it to come into contact with the oven-bottom or preferably by permitting it to rest upon a stop-pin F, which projects from the side wall of the oven.
1 wish it to be understood that the arrangement of the pivots a so that the door B will automatically remain open and the relative arrangement of the arms G and D so that they shall disengage before the door comes to its full open position are not essential features of the invention, as the Weighted arm D may be relied upon to hold the door open.
WVhile I have thus far described but one weighted arm D, I prefer to employ two,v
be objectionable.
The counterbalancing device which I have thus described is such that the door is easily,
moved from one position to another and is held either open or closed, as may be desired, and the balance is so perfect that there is no slamming of the door as it is opened or closed, as is sooften the case with the doors of warming-ovens as now constructed.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the door and. the pivoted arms upon which it is supported, of the rearward-extending pivoted weighted arm separate from and bearing upon one of the door-supporting arms at a point to one side IOO of its pivot, whereby it acts as a counter-balance for the door, substantially as set forth. 2.'-The combination, with the door B and its supporting-arms O, of the weighted lever D, pivoted upon the same center as one of the arms 0, and the projection E on one of the arms C, engaging with the arm D, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an oven, the combination of the door B, its supporting-arms C, the Weighted arms D, the projections E on the arms 0, adapted to engage with the arms D, and the stops for the arms D, which arrest their movements just as or before the. door reaches its open position, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with an oven, of a door which serves to close the opening thereto, the
pivoted arms mounted upon the inner faces of the ends or side pieces of the oven and secured to the said door, by which the door is caused to move into the oven when it is swung, and the rearward-extending pivoted weighted arm mounted inside the oven and separate from and bearing upon one of .the door-supporting arms at a point to one side of its pivot, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
