-Be it known that I, SHERIDAN 'BABCOCK,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa Falls, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Door Control, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application aims to provide novel means for operatively connecting a pair of swinging doors so that the doors may be manipulated simultaneously, novel means being provided for holding the doors in an open position or in a closed position.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the descriptionvproceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a building embodying the present invention, the ceiling being removed, and parts being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a section taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1. 1
In the accompanying drawings there is shown a building, such as a garage, including walls 1 and 2.
The invention comprises a support 3 which may be a part of the wall 1. Interposed in the wall 1 is a jamb 4, a jamb 5 being similarly located in the wall 2. In the jamb 4 and in the part 3 there is formed an opening 6. The ceilingof the building appears at 7, and the jambs 4 and 5 are extended upwardly above the ceiling.
Mounted on the jambs 4 and 5 above the ceiling are bearings 8. Intermediate bearings 9 are mounted on the jambs 4 and 5 below the ceiling 7. The jambs 4 and 5.carry lower bearings 10 disposed adjacent the floor of the building. A primary shaft 11 is 10- catcd adjacent the jamb 5 and is-journaled in one set of the bearings 8, 9 and 10.. The member 10 constitutes a thrust bearing for the shaft 11, and the shaft 11 extends upwardly above the ceiling 7. A secondary shaft 12 is journaled in the hearings on the jamb 4 and extends upwardly abdve the ceil- Specification of Letters Patent.

,i'ng. Hangers 14 are secured to the shafts 11 and 12, and are secured to the doors 15 and 16. The door 15 is operated by the shaft 11, and the door 16 is operated by the shaft 12. Secured to the shaft 12 intermediate its ends 15 an operating lever 17 which proj ects through the opening 6, so that the doors may be manipulated from a point outside of the building. By outside the building I do not ofnecessity mean in the open air, since the lever 17 might be operated in an ad oining office or adjacent building of any kind.' If it is desired to operate the lever '17 from a distant point, any suitable mechanism for that end may be provided.
The shaft 11 carries an arm 18 located above the ceiling 7. The arm "18 isformed into an eye '19 surrounding the upper end of the shaft 11, the end 20 of the eye being attached by means of-securing elements 21 to the body portion of the arm 18. A pin 22 connects the eye 19.with the upper end of the shaft 11. The outer end of the arm 18, which may be denominated a primary arm, carries a pivot element 23 which is removable. The pivot element 23 engages the fork 24 of a screw 25 threaded into one end of a rod 27. The primary arm 18 projects forwardly from the doors 15 and 16 when the doors are closed. The screw 25, being threaded at 26 into the rod 27, coiiperates with the rod 27 to form a longitudinally extensible connection. This connection may be held at adjusted lengths by rotating a nut 28 which is threaded onto the screw 25, until the nut abuts against the end of the A secondary arm 29 is located above the ceiling 7 and is connected to the upper end of the secondary shaft 12 in'the same way that the primary arm 18 is connected to the primary shaft 11. The secondary arm 29 terminates in a hook 30 defining a slot 31. In the slot 31 is located a pin 32 having a shoulder 33 which engages the upper face of 'the arm 29. A nut 40 is threaded onto the lower end of the pin 32 and engages the lower edge of the arm 29. Owing to the construction above described, the pin 32 may be shifted in the slot 31 in the arm 29, for adjustment. It is desirable to shift the pin 32 in the slot 31 to vary the length of the connection 36 in order that the doors 15 and 16 may operate properlv. One end of the rod 27 is mounted to swing on the pin 32 above the shoulder 33. Mounted to swing on the pin 32 is a plate 34 held in place by a. nut 35 on the upper end of the pin.
-An L-shaped hanger 37 is pivoted at 36 to the support 3 and operates above the ceiling 7. The hanger 37 includes a laterally projecting finger 38. A retractile spring 39 is provided, one end of the spring being secured to the swinging plate 3% and the other end of the spring being secured to the finger 38 of the hanger 37. When the doors 15 and 16 are closed as shown in Fig. 1, the point of connection between the spring 39 and the finger 38 lies to the right of the axis of the shaft 12. The tendency of the spring 39, therefore, is to hold the doors 15 and 16 in a closed position. When the doors are moved to an open position, the point of connection between the spring 29 and the finger 38 moves to the left of the axis of the shaft 12, the tendency of the spring 39 being to hold the doors 15 and 16 in an open position.
When the doors are to be opened or closed, the shaft 12 is rotated by means of the handle 17. The shaft 12 operates the door 16 directly. By means of the arm 29, motion is transmitted to the connection comprising the rod 27 and the screw 26, motion sert them wherever it is necessary, the drawings have not been encumbered by the specific delineation of ball bearings of any kind.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a building; shafts journaled on the building; doors carried by the shafts; arms carried by the shafts, one arm projecting rearwardly from the doors when the doors are closed,
and the other arm projecting forwardly from the doors when the doors are closed; a connection; means for pivotally uniting the connection with the forwardly projecting arm; a pivot element assembled with the connection; means for mounting the pivot element on the rearwardly projecting arm for adjustment longitudinally of said arm; an L-shaped hanger having a finger; means for pivotally supporting the hanger in front of the doors; and a spring connecting the finger with the pivot element, the point of connection between the spring and the finger being adapted to move transversely of the shaft which carries the rearwardly projecting arm, whereby the spring will tend to swing the doors toward closed position and toward open position at different times, the finger being in spaced, relation to the shaft which carries the rearwardly projecting arm, when the doors are closed.
2. In a device of the class described, a building having a doorway and including walls and a ceiling, one wall having an opening; a primary shaft journaled adjacent one wall, and a secondary shaft journaled adjacent the other wall, both shafts projecting above the ceiling; an operating member on one shaft and projecting through the opening; doors secured to the shafts; a primary arm secured to the primary shaft and located above the ceiling, said primary arm projecting forwardly from the doors when the doors are closed; a secondary arm secured to the secondary shaft and located above the ceiling, the secondary arm projecting rearwardly from the doors when the doors are closed; a longitudinally extensible connection; means for pivoting one end of the connection to one arm; means for securing the other end of the connection pivotally to the other arm at adjusted points along said other arm; a support; a hanger pivoted thereto and located above the ceiling, the hanger including an angularly disposed finger adapted to move transversely of the secondary shaft; and a spring connecting the finger'with the secondary arm, the finger constituting a means for transferring the pull of the spring to opposite sides of the axis of the secondary shaft, whereby the spring will tend to swing the doors to a closed position and to an open position at different times.
