Description
v w. A. DE FOREST. DOOR OPERATING MECHANISM.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 15, 1919.

UNITED 'YSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
WIN'THROP A. DE FOREST, OF TOLEDO, QEIO.
DOOR OPEBATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, WINTER-OP A. Du
'Fonnsr, a citizen of the United States, re-
sidin at Toledo, in the county of Lucas andtate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Operating Mechanisms; and I ,do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willj enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer mechanism for opening and closing folding doors, such as the doors of a garage. My invention is also designedto furnish a construction by means of which such opening and closing of the doors ma be effected from a point remote from the oors.
.To-these ends my invention consists ofthe devices,- construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top-plan view of a pair of folding doors equipped with my control, and Fi 2, an elevation of the same.
imilar characters indicate like parts in both views.
In the drawin s, a pair of doors, hinged to swing inward y, is indicated by the numerals 1-2. Upon the casing of these doors, or upon the wall, directly abovethe meeting line of the free edges of the doors,
is rigidly secured a stout bracket 3. .Upon the outer end of this bracket a' horizontal.
77 are brackets secured to the wall or door-casing at opposite sides of the dooropening near and just'below theupper edge of the doors. To each of these brackets is pivotally secured, as at 8, one end of a lever 9, of the second class. At their other ends these levers are' connected, as at 10, with oneend of a connecting rod 11, the other end of which is pivotally connected, as at 12, with the lever 4, the two rods 11 being connected with opposite ends of the lever 4. The rods 11 are adjustable, as to length, by means of turn-buckles. as clearly Specification of Iietters Patent.

indicated in the drawings. The rods herein referred to may be and preferably are formed ofpipes. The relation of the levers 9 and the rods ll to the lever 4 is such that the latter lever rests normally at an angle of forty-five degrees to the plane of the doors when these are in either closed or open position.
Upon each of the doors near its top, is
secured a bracket 13 to which is pivoted, as at 14, one end ofalink-bar 15, the other end of which is pivotally connected, asatv 16, to the lever 9. It will be seen that the parts thus far described as connected with lever 4, are interchangeable and may be used upon either the right or left hand door. It is now manifest that the swing of thelever 4 upon its fulcrum will, through rods 11 the levers 9 andthe links 15,.cause the doors to swing upon their hinges either into open or closed position. This swing of the lever 4 1s attalned by means of the mechanism now to be described.-
is pivotallyconnected, as at 19, with the lever 4, as at 20,-by means of the longitudinally adjustable rod or pipe 21. Secured to the upright shaft 18, aconvenient distance from the floor, is an arm or handle 22, by means of which the shaft 18 may be rotated, thus giving motion to the arm 18 and to the lever 4 through the connecting rod 21. It will thus be seen that by swinging the handle 22, the doors, through the connections above described, are'swung upon their hinges into openor closed position. v
If it is desired to operate the doors from a distant point, this may be effected by 'means of a'rod 23 pivotally connected to the arm or handle 22,- as at 24, and extending to any desired point. It will be understood,
without illustration, that this rod may be either manually or mechanically actuated, and that the mechanical means may be of any suitable sort controlled by any familiar controlling devices, which, being no part of the present invention, need not be here fur ther elaborated. y
Having described my invention. what 'I crumed on the latter brackets, v pivotally connect the latter levers'with the 1 the meeting edges of the doors, a lever of the first cIass fulcrumed on said -bracket,
for each of said doors a stationary bracket secured near the top of the hinged edge of the door, levers of the. second class fullinksrwhi h doors rods which pivotally connect the opposite ends of the lever first mentioned W th said links, and devices for actuating said. 15
D first mentioned lever, whereby the doors are simultaneously opened'and' closed? v In testimony whereof'I affix-my signatnre in presence oftwo Witnesses.
