Specificaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
To all "witam z't may conoern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Center, in the county of Rails, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Gravity- Hinge, of which the following is a specifioation.
The object of my invention is to provide a hinge of novel construction adapted to close the door by gravity; to provide a hinge so constructed as to support the door so that it will not sag; and to provide a hinge that will permit of the door being taken down without the removal of any screws.
It is further my object to provide a hinge that will allow the door to stand open when pushed beyond ninety degrees from the closed position.
It is an especial object of my invention to eliminate the necessity for springs to close the door.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a hinge that can be regulated easily as to its closing qualities. v
I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompan fing drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my invention ap'f plied to a door; and Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the hinge.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in each of the views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 2 designates the door and 1 the door frame. A hinge rod 7 is secured to the door frame by suitable straps 8 and fastening` members 4. I provide bifurcated lever' 9 having its outer end portion extending slidably through the screw-eye 14 which is fastened to the approximate center of the door, as illustrated. The hooked end 10 of lever 9 is slidably engaged about hinge rod 7. The lower arm 11 of the bifurcated lever has a downwardly turned end 12 engaged in an aperture 13 of the L-shaped plate 5 in its outturned portion 6 at a point substantially beyond the hinge rod 7 as illustrated in the drawings. It is Within the contemplation of my invention to change the position of 7 and balance the door. When the door is released its weight bearing` on the bifurcated lever 9 will cause the door to swing to its closed position, this operation resulting from the offset position of the end 12 of arm 11 of the lever 9 relative to the position of hooked end 10 of the other arm of the lever, which engaged about hinge rod 7. I may change the position of aperture 13, and thus modify the inclination of lever 9, which will modify the operation of the gravity hinge accordingly. The door will stand open when pushed past the right angle are, or substantially beyond 90 degrees from closed position.
It is within the contemplation of my in- Vcntion to apply my hinge to doors of all kinds, and especially to screen doors, barn doors and gates.
vWhat I claim is:
In a gravity hinge, the combination of a door frame having a substantially Vertical rod mounted thereto, a door having strap members slidably engaging the aforesaid rod, a bifurcated lever having a looped arm slidably engaging the rod and having a second arm engaging a member attached to the door frame at a point substantially beyond the rod, the aforesaid member aiixed to the door frame, and a member afiixed to the door through which the end of the bifurcated lever projects.
GEORGE W. LILLY.
