To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MIOAJAH 0. PLUM: MER and ORIN O. DINSMORE, citizens of the United States, residing at Paralta, inthe county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Automatic Door- ?peuer, of which the following is aspecifica- Ion.
This invention relates to an automatic door- 110 opener adapted for single or double doors, and has for its object to improve devices of this class and to adapt the same for use in hotel dining rooms where waiters have to pass through with their hands full, or in other similar places to provide means for conveniently opening the door or doors. 7
With this and otherobjects in view, theinvention consists of the construction and ar-. rangement of the parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a suitable frame, to which is hinged a door 2, that may be provided with suitable weather stripping 3, and has the lower edge at the rear formed with a recess 4, from which vertically depends a headed stud or pin 5.
4b The door 2 is hung high enough to permit the mounting or positioning of a platform 6 thereunder that stands at a very slight elevation above the level of the floor and comprises a long section 7, to which is hinged a shorter 5 section 8, both of said sections running to an elevated point at 01' about the center thereof on an upward incline. The hinges connecting the parts of the platform comprise a pair of metallic straps 9,on each side that engage each other and connected by a rod or pintle 10, the inner opposing edges of the said sec- Serial No. 472,120. (No model) tions 7 and 8 being suitably recessed or grooved to permit the free passage and location of the said rod or pintle 10. .At the inner edge of the section 7, on the under sideof the same, is secured a metal plate'll, having a pair of downwardly-extending arms 12, that are spaced apart from each other, and the adjacent under edge of the section 8 has a wear-plate 13secured thereto. project downwardly into a metallic well 14, located under the door and have a pair of transverse shafts or rods 15 carrying shouldered dogs 16, that extend downwardlyinto the well and p are properly positioned relatively to the latter. The said dogs are united to operate simultaneously by a rod 17,'that is movably connected to the same and whose one end is projected toward the rear and attached to a crank 18, of a vertically-disposed 7o crank-shaft 19, that has bearing against the side of the well 14, as at 20. The upper end of the crank-shaft projects above the surface of the'well and has a horizontally-disposed arm 21, with a shouldered or hooked end 22, said arm normally occupying a position in the recess 4 of the'door and the shouldered or hooked end thereof engages the headed stud or pin 5, to thereby impart the movement to openthe door to the latter against the resist- 8o ing action of a suitable spring 23, having one end connected to the frame 1 and the opposite end attached to said door.
It will be seen that the hinge connection of the two'sections of the platform 6 provides for the free movement of one section'of said platform on the other when the section 7, especially,is depressed by weight brought to bear thereon. When the platform entire is in position the arms 12 rest in the shouldered o portions of the dogs 16, and the latter being normally elevated within the well 14, hold the center of the platform elevated. same also, through its connection with the section 7, operates to keep the door open when a weight is brought to bear thereon long enough to permit a person to pass through the door-opening.

Having described this invention, what is claimed as :new -is- 1. :In a door-opening mechanism, the combinati'onof a door having a headed stud or pin depending therefrom, an armadapted to engage said lheaded stud or=pin,a crankshaft secured to said arm, a rod attached to the crankshaft, a pair of shouldered dogs connected to said rod and mounted upon shafts, and a platform comprising two hinged sections elevated at the centerand oneof which is supplied with depending arms removably engaging the said shouldered dogs, the said door being supplied with a closing spring, substantially as described.
2. In a door-opening mechanism, the combination of a'door having a closing spring in connect-ion therewith,-and a depending headand loosely-engage the said shouldered'dogs,
substantially as described.
