Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915;.
Application led December 20, 1912. Serial No. 737,858.
T0 (1U/whom 'it may 00710677@ Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALFONSO Liann-maar, of the city of Hamilton, in the county of Wentworth, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, manufacturer, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumb-l/V'aiters, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXactfdescription of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in dumbwaiters and the object of the invention is to. devise'a dumbwaiter kwhich is, suspended from the joists of the upper iioor and which will extend down below the same but will be clear of the floor below.
A further object is to devise means for locking the waiter portion in a closed or down position, so that the top of the same will be flush with the floor above; and a further object is to provide means actuated by a handle on the top of the waiter portion for releasing the lock.
The invention consists of a jamb portion having a suitable door therein below the joists, a metal frame secured to the top of the jamb and designed to be counter-sunk into a suitable opening in the upper floor above, the waiter portion having suitable shelves therein and vertically slidable within the jamb portion, cords extending over pulleys secured to the jamb portion and secured at one end near the bottom of the Waiter portion, the other ends of the cords being provided with suitable weights for counterbalancing the weight of the waiter portion, a lock counter-sunk into the top of the waiter portion having a suitable bolt designed to be held by a spring into the slot in the jamb when the waiter is in the closedor down position, a handle pivotally connected to the top of the waiter portion and having depending pronged portions designed to ene gage the bolt and to release the same when the handle is turned into a vertical position all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device showing the upper part in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section. Fig'. 4 is a section ofthe upper part of the waiter portion showing the locl and handle applied thereto. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the handle. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of the bolt of the lock.
Like characters of reference indicate cor responding parts in rdifferent views.
1 is the jainlo of the dumbwaiter and 2 is the metal frame suitably secured to the top and designed to be set into an apertureA in the upper floor 3 Vso that the upper edge of the same is flush with the surface of the floor. The metal frame 2 is suitably secured toy the j amb 1 of the dumbwaiter by the pins 2a; consequently when the metal frame isin position on the jainb the same will be supported yor, suspended from the upper floor 3.
3? ris the lower iioor.
4 are the joists upon which the iioor 3 and the j amb portion are supported.
5 is the door of the jamb portion having a suitable screened front 6.
7 is the waiter portion vertically slidable in the j amb portion and having vertical ygrooves 8 in the sides thereof into which guides 9 secured to the inner sides of the j amb portion extend.
l0 are suitable pulleys secured to the jamb portion, 11 are cords extending around the saine and down the grooves 12 in the sides of the waiter portion; said cords being secured at one end near the bottom of the waiter portion and the other ends being provided with counter balancing weights 13.
14 are the shelves of the waiter portion.
15 is thel locl suitably inserted into the top of the waiter portion and having a bolt 16 adapted to enter a slot 17 in the jamb portion 1 when the waiter portion is in the down or closed position.
18 is a cross bar provided on the inner end of the bolt 16.
19 is a handle pivot-ally connected in a frame 2O which is counter-sunk into the top of the waiter' portion.
19a are depending prong shaped portions adapted to engage the cross bar 18 releasing 'the bolt when the handle is raised into a vertical position. rl`he bolt is held in engagement with the slot by a spring 21.
From the above description it will be seen that when it is desired to raise the waiter portion it is only necessary to pull up the handle 19 which releases the bolt 16 and allows the waiter portion to be drawn upward to a requisite extent. When the waiter is done with it is simply pushed down until the top of the waiter portion is flush with the floor when the spring 21 forces the bolt 16 into the slot 17 of the jamb; further the clumbwaiter .being supported on the joistsw far as the floor below. For instance assume ing that it is desired yto place the waiter between the cellar and the oor of the kitchen it is supported from the joists of the kitchen floor and the j ainb extends down into the e cellar, but it is clear from the cellar loor.
This prevents any vermin getting yinto the waiter.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A dumbwaiter, comprising a jamb portion, a metal frame suitably secured to the top of the jamb portion, said metal frame also secured to the upper floorand supportlingA the jamb portion, saidijamb portion be# `the free end of each oord, and means for locking the waiter in the down or closed position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence oli-two witnesses.
WILLIAM ALFONSO LIGHTHEART.
