GEORG GTTE, 0F CASSEL, GERMANY.
DRAFT-EXCLUDER FOR DOORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORG GTTE, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Cassel, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Excluders for Doors, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improved draft excluder for closing the crevice between the threshold and the Iower edge of the bottom rail of a door.
In prior draft excluders of this class the movable draft excluding strip is raised or lowered during opening and closing of the door. According to my invention, on the other hand, the strip is lifted immediately the door handle is turned, so that it is impossible for it to drag on the oor. In this matter carpets, mats, rugs and the like can be laid right up to the door, or even under it if the usual sill is dispensed with.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is an elevation of portions of a door fitted with the new draft excluder, fragments of the bottom rail and stile being removed to display underlying parts. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the door lock, drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is an elevation and part longitudinal section of fragments of the bottom rail of the door, drawn to the same scale. Fig. l is a cross section through a fragment of the bottom rail, drawn to the same scale. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the auxiliary latch employed, drawn to a larger scale, the cover-plate being removed.
rIhe under edge of the bottom rail a of the door is provided with a groove e, into which there is fitted a wooden strip Z) preferably furnished with metal rails or anges c and having mounted on it small pulleys Z1.. In the groove c, between the anges c, there is provided a draft excluding strip f of felt, rubber or the like, which may be suitably held between two metallic rails cZ. In the stile o of the door there is fixed a latch p having an upright bolt la; and above this auxiliary latch is the actual door lock g, which, in addition to the usual latch bolt j, operated by the lever handle r, has pivoted to it a bent lever Z. One of the arms of this lever engages with the latch bolt y', while the other is attached by a cord or the like a and screw t to the top end of the bolt of the latch p. The other end of the bolt Specification of Letters Patent.

/c stands in engagement with the draft excluding strip f eZ through the agency of a cord or the like g, secured by screws a u and passing over the pulleys L. Pivoted to the side plate of the latch p there is a tumbler Z, which is weighted so as to bear continuously against a horizontal bolt m, adapted to engage in the notch of the bolt Ze and lock the latter when in its elevated position. The bolt is disengaged by the bolt m on the latter striking a pin s projecting from the door j amb.
The operation of the device is as follows I/Vhen the handle r is turned the latch bolt j is retracted and the bent lever z' thus actuated, whereby the cord n is caused to lift the bolt la, while the latter draws upon the cord g. The draft excluding strip j' cZ is thus lifted, receding into the groove c so that it can not drag upon the floor. In this position of the parts the load of the tumbler Z acting on the bolt m will shoot the latter, thus locking the bolt Za in its elevated position, so that this bolt can not drop on release of the handle r. On the door being closed again, however, the bolt m strikes the pin s and is thus pushed back against the action of the weighted tumbler Z. The bolt c is thus released and drops, whereby the pull on the cord g is removed. The draft excluding strip f Z thus drops and protrudes again from the groove e, covering the crevice between bottom rail a and threshold.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. In combination, a door whose bottom edge presents a groove, a draft excluding strip located in the groove, a latch secured to the door and having a vertically sliding bolt, a tumbler automatically locking the bolt in its raised position and means for automatically releasing the bolt on closing of the door, a door lock located above the said latch, and a bent lever pivoted to the lock and having its one arm engaged by the latch bolt of the lock, flexible means connecting the other arm of the lever with the vertically sliding bolt, and flexible means engaging the draft excluding strip and attached to the lower end of said bolt, whereby on the latch bolt of the door lock being retracted the lever is turned, the vertically sliding bolt lifted and locked and the draft excluding strip withdrawn into the groove, while on closing of the door the said'bolt is released and the draft excluding strip allo-Wed to drop, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a door Whose bottom edge presents a groove, a draft excluding strip located in the groove, a latch secured to the door and having a vertically sliding notched bolt, a horizontally sliding member and a pivotal Weighted tumbler adapted to cause engagement between said member and bolt, and means for automatically releasing said member from the bolt on the door being closed, a door lock located above said latch, and a bent lever pivoted to the lock and having its one arm engaged by the latch bolt of Ythe lock, flexible means connecting the other arm of the lever With the vertically sliding bolt, flexible means engaging the draft excluding strip and'attached tothe lower end of said bolt, and pulleys mounted in the groove, over Which said latter flexible means runs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
