IMPROVEMENT IN WEATH ER-STRIPS.

Spec fication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 217,998, dated July 29, 1879; application filed December 30, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RUEL W. DAVIS, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and Comnionwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Weather-Strip; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.

This invention relates to weather-strip attachments for doors; and it consistsin certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the attachment, showing the weatherstrip raised, as when the door is open. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view, showing the weather-strip down, as when the door is shut. Fig. 4. is an end view of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a door having my improved weather strip attachment.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the case or box, which is adapted to be attached to the bottom of a door by means of screws, nails, or other like means. The case Ais provided with alongitudinal horizontal groove, (1, in which slides a bar or rod, B, projecting at one end beyond the case, and provided at said end with an angular latch, L, adapted to strike the jainb F when the door is closed, thus forcing the bar B into the case against the tension of a spring, 0, arranged at its inner end.

The weather-strip S, which consists simply of a wooden strip, having a strip of rubber, m, inserted in its lower edge, is arranged in a recess, d, in case A, below the longitudinal groove 1).

G G are levers, pivoted to the side of case A above groove b, and provided at their lower ends with eccentric slots 0 e to accommodate screws or studs f f, secured in the weatherstrip, which is thereby retained in the recess d.

In operation, the case A, with its attachments, is secured to the lower edge of the side of a door in the position represented in Fig. 5 of the drawings. When the door is closed the projecting latch L strikes the jamb F, thus forcing the bar B in an iiiward direction. The studs j upon bar B will thus cause the levers Gr to swing upon their pivots, thereby causing the weather-strip, the studs f of which work in the eccentric grooves e of the levers, to be moved in a downward direction toward the sill of the door, against which the rubber strip m is pressed, thus making atight The vertical slot 9 in plate P, in which the stud h of the weather-strip slides, prevents any swinging or lateral movement of the weather-strip.

When the door is opened the springc pushes the bar B in an outward direction, thus reversing the above-described operation, and causing the weather-strip to be lifted up into the case A, thereby preventing it from sliding upon the floor, and consequent wear upon the strip, and dit'ficulty of opening or closing the door.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The case A, having groove b and recess d, in combination with the sliding bar B, having latch L and studs jj, spring 0, levers G G, having slots i and eccentric slots e, weatherstrip S, having studs f f h, and the plate P, having vertical slot g, all arranged and operatin g substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
