IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,002, dated September 15, 1874; application filed July 3,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. BLAKE, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebecand State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish a convenient and. efficient. device for holding window-sashes in any desired position, and for fastening them when they are down; and it consists of the novel combination and arrangement of a roller and spring-catch, operated by a thumb-latch, or automatically by the roller working upon the inclined face of the spring-catch, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, a portion of the box or casing being broken away to show the working parts. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a back elevation. Fig. 4 is grooved ratchet to be used particularly on car or other windows subject to jar.

sponding parts.
The working parts are inelosed in a box or frame, A, which is mortised into the jambcasing and fastened by screws. B is a catch, having a point, F, actuated and held in position by the spring (J. Dis a loose roller working upon the face of the spring-catch B.
The action of this sash-holder is as follows: The window being closed, to raise it, press down on the thumb-latch or operating-lever E, which throws back the point of the catchand releases the sash, which can then be raised to any desired height. As soon as the sash moves, the thumb may be removed from the latch or operating-lever, which operates automatically, and will permit both hands being used to raise the window. Upon the first movement of the sash upward, the roller D, being loose, moves with it along the inclined face of the catch B as far as it can go, until it brings up against the projecting point of the catch, which, being beyond the axis of the catch B, forces the point F back, and permits the free up ward movement of the sash. When the sash has reached the desired height, the hands are removed and the sash drops half an inch or so, the roller D sliding down with it, till, having passed below the axis of the catch B, it forces out the point F of the catch B, which bears against the sash, and prevents its farther downward movement.
For house-windows this pressure is sufficient to hold the sash in place; but for car or other windows subject to continued jar, I have provided a grooved metal channel, Fig. 4, to be fastened to the side of the sash, in which the roller D plays, and prevents the wear of the wood which has a ratcheted edge into which the point F of the catch B locks, and effectually stops further movement. In any case there is a mortised hole in the sash into which the point F enters when the sash is entirely down, which locks the sash and prevents its being raised except from theinside, so that when the window is closed it is sure to be locked.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved sash-holder, consisting of case A, catch B, having point F, spring 0, wheel D, moving on the inclined face of the springcatch, and thumb-latch or operating-lever E, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
H. A. BLAKE.
