OPERATING DEVICE FOR SLIDING GATES.

To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jenn N. \VARD, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Operating Devices for Sliding Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the lever-fulcrum bracket with part of the lever.
The claims are referred to for statement of the invention.
Q, Q, and It are fence-posts, to which are attached boards A, as usual. The gateway is between the posts Q and Q. The gate has uprights L and L and horizontal rails B B The upper rail, 13, extends beyond the upright L, as shown, and to the inner side of it is attached a strip, B, that extends the whole length of the bar B, and below the edge of the same is a rib, b, that serves to hold the bar 13 upon the rollers N and 0, upon which it runs as the gate is slid open and shut.
llil is a roller above the rail B and strip 13, and serves to hold them down upon the roller N. The rollers N and 0 have parts of different diameter, the parts of smaller diameter being marked a 0, respectively, and being contiguous to the fence-posts Q and R, upon which the rollers are supported. The arrangement is such that the rib b runs over the reduced parts at o, and the bottom of rail B runs over the parts of larger diameter, so that the rib has side bearing against the part of larger diameter, and prevents the escape of the rail B from the rollers. The uprights L L are outside the line of the rollers, so as not to interfere with the movements of the gate. Upon the post Q is a cross-bar, P, whose ends carry fulcrumpins 12 of levers H H.

The lower end of the pitmanl is hinged to the arm F of the lever by which the gate is opened and closed. This lever has a horizontal portion, D, that formsa rockshaft upon which the lever swings, the rock shaft turning in a bracket, E, fastened to the post Q.
D is an upwardly-extending arm of this lever, carrying a weight, G.
O is a rod connecting the upper end of the arm D to the gate, and supporting the arm therefrom. The arrangement is such that when the arm D is at its lowest position upon one side the gate is closed, (see Fig. 1,) and when at its lowest position on the other side the gate is open. (See Fig. 2.)

The arms I) and F should not be in the same plane, so that the arm D may be thrown from a vertical position by an upward or downward movement of either of the levers H. (It will be seen that if these two arms were in the same plane and the arm D should come to rest in a vertical position movement of the levers H would be prevented, as the arm F would be in line with the pitman I.)
To open the gate when closed, or vice versa, the long end of one of the levers H is drawn down,which lifts the arms F and D. The momentum of the weight G carries the arms past a vertical position, and the descent of the arms completes the movement of the gate in opening or closing.
To look the gate shut, I use a pendent bolt, K, hanging from the lever H, and passing through a guide, K. The arrangement is such that the first effect of the lever H as its outer end is pulled down is to lift the pin K out of the course of the gate. (When the levers H are at rest the pin K is in the course of the gate.)
