SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,337, dated October 19,1886.
Application filed May 15, 1886. Serial No. 202,340. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES E. PLUMTEY, of Byron, county of Contra Costa, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Gates; and I hereby declare the following to be ai'ull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of gates which are adapted to be readily opened and closed by the traveler without putting him to the necessity of alighting from his vehicle or other conveyance; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe. 4
The object of niy invention is to provide a 'simple and readily-operating gate of this class.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure lis aperspective view of my gate, showing it partially open. Fig. 2 is au elevation of the post, braces, lever, and cords, the gate being removed.
A is the roadway, and B is the gate of any desired or suitable construction which is adapted to close and open the roadway.
C is the gate-post to which the gate is latched, and D is the post to which it is hinged. The post D should be perfectly vertical, and is higher than the post C.l Suitable braces, d, extend from the ground to an arm, E, secured upon thetop of the post D. Bolted to the bottom of the post D is a casting, F, which forms a bearing for the divergent legs g oi' the lever G. This lever extends upwardly and approximately parallel with the post'D, and is guided by a slotted piece or guide, H, bolted to the post D. One of the legs of this lever restsin a small recess in the bearing F at one side, while the other leg rests in one at the other side, and said lever is thus adapted by a side mgyement to rise on one or the other of its legs as a fulcrum. The lever is provided above the guide with a socket, I, in which is pivoted the pintle b, extending from the end post of the gate. i
The top hinge of the gate is constructed in the following manner: The cross-arm E of the post D is provided with an elongated slot, e, and apin or pintle, b, extends upwardly from the top of the end post of the gate and enters the slot, being adapted to rise and play within said slot. This pintle is preferably provided with an anti-friction roller, b.
J is an elbow-lever, pivoted to the outer end of the arm E by its angle. Its long arm carries a weight, W', while its shorter arm is connected by a rod, j, with the top of the pintle b.
K are the operating-cords. An end of each cord is secured at the points d to each of the braces d. The cord thence extends to and around a pulley in the upper end ofthe lever G, back again to the brace, around a pulley in which it passes, and up in a channel in said brace to a point above where another pulley is located and back over the pulley to a point alongside of the road, where it is guided by a pulley on a post set at that point, and not necessary herein to be shown. The object of these cords is to pull the lever to one side or the other. This movement of the lever is also taken advantage of to operate the latch of the gate.
L is the latch, which consists of a bar hung from one of the horizontal bars ofthe gate by two loosely-pivoted parallel links, l, so that said latch in swinging down by gravity is adapted to project its end forward through the end of the gate and engage the catch-socket c on the gate-post O. A cord, M, is attached to therear end of the latch and passes to and through the other end of the gate, and is secured to the lever G.
The operation of my gate is as follows: The traveler approaching seizes and pulls upon one of the operating-cords. lThe first effect of this is to pull the lever G over toward him, and this movement ofthe lever, which turns about its nearest leg as a fulcrum, raises the hinged connection of the gate through the are in which the lever is moving, thus raising and throwing out of line the bottoni of the hinge end ofthe gate, the pintle b at the top end of the gate traveling upward in the slot ot' the arm E to permit this movement. The movement of the lever G continues until the cord M, connected with the latch, becomes taut and is pulled upon, whereby the `latchis withdrawn from the catch of the post O. The gate being now unlatched,and the lower portion of its hinge end being raised and turned out of line, it swings open away from the traveler by its own weight to a certain point where the weight IV begins to act and pulls the top pintle 0f the gate over in the slot of the arm E, thereby fully opening the gate. After the IOO zontally-traveling hinge-connection at itsup-` per end, in combination with the vertical lever G, fulcrumed at a point to one side ofthe gate, and a hinge-connection between said gate and the lever at a point above its fulcrum,
whereby the movement of the lever raises the end ot' the gate and turns it ont of line, substantially as herein described.
2. The gate B and a vertically-sliding and horizontally-traveling hinge-connection at its upper end, in combination with avertical leverin the longitudinal vertical plane or line of the gate and fulcrumed at a point torone side of said plane or line, so as to movethrough an arc in a vertical plane, ahingeconnection between the gate in the plane ot' its length and the lever at a point above its fulcrum, and cords for turning'the lever on .its fulcrum, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The gate B, in combination with the lever G, having divergent legs g, on which it rests. and on which it alternately fulcr'ums in its movement, and a hinge-connection between the gate and the lever, substantially as herein described.
4. The gate B and the post D, having a slotted arm, E, on its top, in combination with the lever G,vhaving divergent legs g, on which it rests and on which it alternately fulcrums, a hinge'connection between the gate and the le-y ver, and a vertically sliding and traveling hinge-connection between the top of the gate and the arm E of the post D, substantially as herein described. The gate B and the post D, having a slotted arm, E, on its top,in combination with the lever G, having divergent legs g, on which it rests and alternately fulcrums,a hinge-connection between the gate and said vlever,the hingepintle b on the top of the gate playing in the slot of the arm E, the pivoted and weighted elbow-lever J on the post D, and the rod j, connecting said lever with the pintle b', substantially as herein described.
6. 'Ihe gate B, the post D, having a slotted arm, E, o'n its top, the bearing F on the base 'of the post, and the guide H, in combination with the lever G, playing in said guidev and having divergent legs g resting and alternately fulcruming in the bearing F, a hinge-connec- Ation between the gate and lever, the hingepintle b on top of the gate playingin theslotted arm E, the pivoted weighted elbow-lever J, and the rod j, connecting said lever with the pintle b', substantially as described.
7. The gate B, the post D, having slotted arm E, and the braces d, in combination with the lever G, having divergent legs g,on which it alternately fulcrums, as described, a hingeconnection between the gate and lever, the pintle b on top ofthe gatevplaying in the slot of the arm E, the pivoted weighted lever J, con nected \with said pintle, and the operatingcords K, secured to the braces and operating the lever G, substantially as herein described.

playing in the guide and having divergentA legs g, t'ulcruming alternately in the bearing F, a hinge-connection between the gate and lever,'the pintle b on the top of the gate, playing in the slottedarm E, the pivoted weighted lever J connected with the pintle b', the cords K, for operating lever G, the suspended gravity-latch L on the gate, and the cord M, connecting it with lever G, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as herein described.
