CHARLES D. HOWARD, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOWARD FURNACE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DRAFT- REG U LATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,595, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed April '7, 1890- Serial No. 346.872. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. HOWARD, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga,in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulators, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of devices for opening and closing of the draft and check dampers of furnaces and heating apparatus which are operated by hand.
My object is to produce an improved device in which both the draft and check dampers may be operated simultaneously.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the regulating device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the upper part thereof. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the regulator mounted upon the wall of the room and the chain connected to a draftdamper and to a check.
A is the back plate, which is secured upon the wall.
B is the face-plate carrying a thermometer, if desired, secured upon the back plate in a detached position.
C is a rounded or angular saddle projecting inwardly from the rear face of the face-plate, and its inner edge bears upon the back plate and creates a cavity 1 around the saddle. This face-plate is secured in position by the screws 2.
D is a chain or cord, the bight of which fits over the saddle and thence extends down through the floor 3 and over suitable pulleys downward to the furnace E,where one end is connected to the draft-damper at and the other to the check-damper 5. This check-damper device is the one shown and described in Letters Patent issued to me May 10, 1887, No. 362,838. It is evident that this chain can be connected to many other styles of check-dampers (or drafts) besides that shown. Upon the inner face of the face-plate I erect two studs 6 6, provided and adapted to receive the ends of the metallic spring 7, (shown as flat in the drawings,) but which can obviously be of any other form which will perform the same function in substantially the same manner-via, by producing a frictional pressure upon the chain, forcing it against the saddle. The chain is also provided with indicating-plates 8, to show to which damper each part of the chain leads, as well, also, as to indicate which is open or closed.
When in the position shown in Fig. 1, the draft-damper is open and the check-damper is closed. Then when I pull down on the draft-chain, drawing the upper part of the chain over the saddle and raising the checkchaiu, I close the draft and open the check. By reversing this movement I close the check and open the draft. The spring exerts africtional grip upon the chain sufficient to hold it in any position to which it is drawn and to support the weight of either damper.
What I claim is- The combination, with the backing and a saddle secured thereto, of a chain passing over the saddle and having its ends connected to the draft and check dampers, respectively, of the spring 7 ,bearing upon and holding the chain in frictional contact with the saddle, said spring being secured at both ends to the studs 6, and the studs 6, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of March, 1890.
I CHARLES D. HOWARD.
In presence of- HOWARD P. DENISON, F. T. DENISON.
