UNITED STATES PATENT o QEEICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN BLOWERS FOR FIREIGRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,854, dated April 21, 1874; application filed `February 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. GUSEMAN, of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blowers for Fire-Grates, of which the following is a speciiication:
The invention relates to counterbalancing the blower by a weighted lever, and operating it by means of a knob `projectimo; through the front of the fire-place, and applied to the leverfulcrum, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved nre-grate. Fig. 2 is an elevation of back; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation ot' Fig. l, taken on the line x Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts.
A is the blower, which is arranged to slide up and down inside of the front B, for opening and closing the tire, and is suspended from the weighted rock-lever C by the link D. The
pivotE of this rock-lever extends through the front B, and forms -the spindle ot' a knob, F, for turning the lever to raise or lower the blower. The weight balances the blower, so that-it will remain at anyheight for wholly or partly opening or closing the grate. A dampi er, G, is pivoted next to the back of the line, for shutting off the draft, and is operated by an arm, H, andlink I, connected with a rocklever, J, which will, in practice, be wei ghtcd.
A damper of any suitable kind may be used with the blower. That (Gi here shown, but
not claimed in thispatent, has elongated pivotholes M, and is operated by arm H, lever J, link'I, knob L, and, when closed, rests against the front wall of the tlue, to which a rib, N, is attached. The back wall P of the iiue has an angle at Q.
I do not claim balancing a blower by a weight; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent- The weighted lever C, pivoted on a bolt or rod projecting, as knob F, through the front B of the tire-place, the link D, and counterbalanced blower A, all combined to operate as shown and described.
WILLIAM D. GUSEMAN.
