ANDREW W. ZEIGLER, OF ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA. SHOW-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. ZEIGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellwood City, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in show-cases and the like; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and convenient device of this character in which the articles or goods for sale will be supported upon a movable false bottom or tray which is moved into and out of the body of the case by the swinging movement of its door.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a showcase embodying my invention, its door being closed to support the false bottom or tray within the body of the case. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, the door being open to move the false bottom or tray partially out of the body of the casing to permit of ready access to the goods upon said bottom. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view showing in full and dotted lines the two positions of the door and the false bottom or tray, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a show-case of any desired form and construction which has its open rear side closed by an outwardly and downwardly swinging door 2. The latter is hinged to the rear of the bottom of the body of the case, as shown at 3, and, if desired, a suitable catch 4 may be provided at the top of the door. Within the body 1 of the case is a false bottom or goods-support 5, which may be in the form of a rectangular tray, as shown, or of any other suitable form and construction. Said bottom or tray 5 is adapted to be moved into and out of the open rear side of the case by the swinging movement of the door 2, and to effect this I hinge the rear edge of the bottom or tray to the inner face of the door and permit the front or inner edge of the bottom or tray to slide upon the bottom 6 of the body of the case. This hinged or pivotal connection between the bottom or tray and the door may be of any form and construction and located at any suitable point; but, as shown, it is effected by providing two hinges 7, located adjacent to the upper and outer edges of the door and the bottom or tray, so that the latter will be supported in an inclined position when the door is closed and will be moved out of the case to a considerable extent when the door is swung open to a horizontal position. In order to permit the bottom or tray to move freely into and out of the body of the case, I preferably provide guides 8 upon the bottom 6 of the case and antifriction-rollers or similar devices 9- upon the under side of the bottom or tray to engage said guides. As shown, the guides 8 are in the form of transversely-extending rods spaced from the bottom 6 and engaged by the antifriction-rollers, which are mounted in suitable brackets secured upon the under side of the bottom or tray. Upon the front portion of the bottom 6 of the body of the case, which portion is uncovered when the door is swung to its open position, I may place suitable advertising matter, as shown at 10. This matter will be displayed every time the door is opened to permit of the removal of the articles or goods upon the bottom or tray 5.
The construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that goods placed upon the bottom or tray 5 will be supported so that they may be readily'seen, and they may be conveniently reached by simply swinging the door of the case to its open position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The device is of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, so that it is not liable to get out of working order, and it is very convenient and easy to operate.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. A show-case or the like, having a down ICO wardly-opening' swinging door, a false bottom or goods-support mounted to slide on the bottom of the case and loosely connected to the door at an elevated point to cause said false bottom to be moved into the case and disposed in an inclined position by the closing of the door, and to be moved outwardly from the case and disposed in a horizontal position by the opening of the door.
2. The combination with a show-case or the like having a swinging door, of a false bottom or goods-support, a hinged connection between said door and said bottom or support, guide-rods upon the bottom of said case, and antifriction devices upon said bottom or support and engaged with said guiderods, substantially as described.
In testimony'whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW W. ZEIGLER. Witnesses:
